Jerrod Johnson Interview

I had the opportunity to interview A&M Quarterback Jerrod Johnson this week as a guest host on the Nick Adams Show. The interview took place on campus at A&M on 1580AM KANM Student Radio.

I have edited the show down to just the interview. Our goal was not to sit there and beat up JJ with questions about why A&M isn't playing well this year. Our goal was to get to know him as a person.

Enjoy.

is it safe to say

he will be better than reggie mcneal as well it appears he has a better head on his shoulds than reggie did.

agreed

reggie was a freak athlete with cobb webs between his ears.

I dont think Jerrod throws as good a ball as Reggie, but what he lacks in physical attributes, he more than makes up for on the mental side.

thanks for the listen… go rangers.

a&m qbs

i just worry that the talent that a&m has on the offensive line which hopefully will improve from this year to next will allow jerrod to be the playmaker i think he is.

i have serval longhorn friends and we debate on Vince Young v. Reggie Mcneal (yes it is in the past but still fun conversation) and i just wonder what if VY played for A&M and Reggie Played for Texas.

i feel that reggie could have been better with the talented offensive line that texas had and vy would have had about the same success as reggie did at a&m.

am i way off on this point or is that the down fall with a&m qbs

as far as recruiting and sherman playing the best avail no matter age would that not attrack some high OL recurits rather than all the skill players?

I don't think VY would have been successful at A&M

it wasn’t all on the OL.

After the 2004 season, the OL was fine.

The difference was in QB coaching.

texas fans can say what they want about his playcalling abilities, but Greg Davis’ record when it comes to developing college QBs is very impressive. Going all the way back to Kevin Murray at A&M through Applewhirte, Simms, Young, and McCoy at texas. I think he would have done a good job with Reggie.

Young, meanwhile, would have completely fallen apart under Les Koenning and Fran. That isn’t saying much, though; look what they did to McGee.

agree

wasnt mcgee a true pocket passer coming out of high school? now his best ability is to run and gain an extra yard or too by taking on hits.

McGee

Yes, he ran the Spread at Burnet, where his top WR was Red River Rivalry standout Jordan Shipley.

He still ranks 6th in career touchdowns all-time with 101.

Completely agree with you about the coaching at Texas.

I think VY would have won a game or two by himself while at A&M running the option. He would not have done very much more than Reggie…like I said maybe a game or two.

you have more faith in Fran/Koenning than I do

I think they would have killed his love for football and driven him from the game.

good point. I suppose i didnt take into account his mental capacity.

Reggie was a poor teammate and acted like a space cadet sometimes, but he actually handled coaching well, IMO.

I love this debate. Pointless? yes, but still fun.

The talent was obviously not the same, but I think VY would have had more success in Fran’s offense than Reggie. Reggie could run, but did not prefer to, he liked to throw the ball, which we stopped doing after Fran’s first year. VY would have done well in the option/zone read offense that Fran put in place. Reggie would have done well at Texas, with Benson, R.Williams and the embarrassment of riches they had on the OL. A lot of QBs could have excelled with that offense.

as far as recruiting and sherman playing the best avail no matter age would that not attrack some high OL recurits rather than all the skill players?

Sherman has a strong class lined up for OL Recruiting for ’09. Rhonte Scales is a guy who will compete for a starting spot from day 1.

I think it will attract ‘some’ players, but the top guys know (think) they can play anywhere right away.

I hope it comes into play for S Craig Loston. He could have started last week, if he was on campus. He would be a big splash for the Aggies, much like Martellus was when he committed.

not exactly
Reggie could run, but did not prefer to, he liked to throw the ball, which we stopped doing after Fran’s first year.

We ran the ball a lot in ‘03. We spread the field and threw the ball in ’04, to protect a young OL. In ’05, we converted to the read-read-spread the WVU runs, and Fran decided we didn’t need to pass anymore. Worst mistake he ever made, imo. It completely ruined Reggie.

That we completely agree on, it was undoubtedly the worst mistake Fran made while at A&M. It started a spiral that we never recovered from.

Reggie was poised for a great year in 2005 and then we decided to go against what had been successful.

sorry bout that, you were right, it was after year 2when we abandoned the forward pass

thanks

for the update.

does a&m cover the 20 pt spread?

i am worried it will be a 3 td differnce to ruin the spread

Like beergut talked about in his conversation with Double T Nation , the aggies are going to have to keep the clock running. That does not stop with the offense, our D needs to force Tech to run the ball and eat up the clock. The shorter the game, the closer A&M will be.
