The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - Oklahoma State
Time for another edition of The Good, The Bad, The Ugly. Previous edition looked at Jorvorskie Lane versus New Mexico. This week, we look at the Okie State game as a whole.
The Good
Jerrod Johnson had his fourth straight game with at least one TD pass, and finished with over 200 yards passing (218) for the game. He is continuing to grow as a QB.
The offense outgained Oklahoma State, 402 yds to 401. I believe this is the first time we've broken the 400 yard barrier this season.
Mike Goodson had over 100 yds rushing, with an 8 carry-112 yds-2 TD effort.
Seven different players (3 backs, 3 receivers, 1 TE) caught passes this game. We're showing some diversity in our offense.
Justin Brantly averaged a phenomenal 54 yds per punt.
Ryan Tannehill is back after missing time with an injury, and highlighted his return by catching two TD passes.
The defense had a nice goal line stand in the first quarter, stopping OSU on 4th and Goal from the 1, after OSU recovered Jeff Fuller's fumble on A&M's first offensive series.
Jorvorskie Lane was carrying the ball in the first quarter, showing an intent to keep Lane involved in the offense.
Special teams blocked an OSU punt. Kenny Brown, an Oklahoma City native, did the honors. (Corrected)
The three times the defense took the field after an A&M turnover, they held OSU to zero points. Good job in keeping your composure and taking care of business.
Defense held Oklahoma State to under 200 yards passing (186 yards). That is a solid effort. We need to be stellar in pass defense with Kansas State coming up next week.
The Bad
5 turnovers in the first half. FIVE. That is just unacceptable. I'm sure our players are going to be completely embarrassed when they watch this again on film.
Jorvorskie Lane only had 4 carries for the entire game. We need to do better than that.
Penalties. We had 9 for 63 yards. Quickest way to kill yourself in a game is turnovers. Second quickest is to continually hurt yourself by giving up yards on penalties. We need to be more disciplined.
Tipped balls: Johnson's two interceptions on the night were both off of passes that went throhugh the hands or off of Aggie receivers.
The Ugly
Two interceptions returned for a TD. Worse, they were both in the first half, helping OSU build a 28-7 lead and take control of the game.
Three fumbles lost, all in the first half. We simply need to protect the ball better.
Special teams play: We've struggled here since the season began, and we gave up a punt return for a TD to Dez Bryant. Just inexcusable.
Injuries: Mike Goodson went down for a while in this game, which hurt our offense.
Conclusion: We're still showing progress. We seemed to be fine after halftime, and just played. We need to play that way all the time, though.

Did you go to the game?
If so, how did the offense, look from a scheme standpoint? What was the ratio of shotgun-under center?
43 passes, 218 yds, 5.1 per attempt. What happened? No blocking? Lot of throw aways? How did JJ look in the passing game?
JJ had 13 carries. Did we run a lot of the zone-read, or were these scrambles?
Did Jorvorskie run out of the I, or was he ever on the field when we were in the shotgun?

I did not keep notes or anything of the game, but we only ran a few zone reads. If I had to guess I would say the carries were evenly distributed between a couple QB sneaks, scrambles and zone read options.
Goodson’s TD was a stretch play out of the gun. (think game-clinching TD v. Baylor 2 years ago)
The blocking was better, but nowhere near where it needs to be.

I did not attend the game.
I was out of town this weekend.
I’ll have to review the game film when I receive it, and get back to you.

I think the blocked punt was Kenny Brown. OSU was using the same punt formation that we used last year.
So with the field spread, we had lots of of our quicker guys out there. I know I saw Drew Williamson leaping for a block at one point.
I could be wrong, but it very well could have been Kenny Brown.
