Rivalry Saturday Review
- I really, really, really enjoyed watching Georgia Tech defeat Georgia today. Apologies to T. Kyle King and his community over at Dawg Sports, but there is just something about watching a flexbone offense run to perfection. Anyone who believes an option offense won't work in a BCS conference, especially in the SEC, needs to watch that game.
- USC's blowout win over Notre Dame was expected; now the Charlie Weiss Watch begins. Weiss now has a lower winning percentage than Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie did when they were both fired. He is now in his fourth season at Notre Dame, so it is definitely the time to see some significant results. The season they have had this year certainly won't hack it at Notre Dame, but I will point out that if they fire Weiss, they are putting themselves into the same situation they were in when they hired him, i.e. whoever follows him will benefit from having a highly-recruited talent entering his third year at QB leading his offense. Weiss has no signature wins to his credit, and has suffered plenty of ugly losses, so firing him is justified. On the other hand, it would be interesting to see if he can do anything with Clausen in his third year in South Bend. I'd like Notre Dame to keep him around just for the easy blog material next season.
- Oregon's win over Oregon State in the Civil War means USC can wrap up their seventh consecutive conference title under Pete Carroll. Winning the Pac-10 would also guarantee them a spot in the Rose Bowl against Big Ten Champion Penn State. If there is controversy over who plays in the BCS National Title Game, it will be interesting to see if the Associated Press tries to give USC a split national title, similar to what happened in 2003.
- Oklahoma's dominant win over Oklahoma State showed two things: Oklahoma should represent the Big 12 South in the Big 12 Championships Game, and Sam Bradford deserves to win the Heisman Trophy. texas fans can quibble about the results of their head-to-head matchup with OU in Dallas all they want, the rest of the body of work favors the Sooners. OU beat Oklahoma State on the road by 20 points; texas struggled to beat OSU at home by 3 points. Oklahoma beat Tech at home by 44 points; texas lost to Tech on the road by 6 points. The most striking testament for OU is their performance against A&M; OU had A&M down 21-0 after the first quarter at Kyle Field, so that game was over before it even had a chance to begin. A&M was down to texas only 7-0 after the first quarter in Austin, and very much in the game. Of the two teams, OU has the more explosive offense, and is just rolling right now. A big part of their offensive success has been the stellar performance of QB Sam Bradford. After his 4 passing TD/1 rushing TD performance against Oklahoma State tonight, Bradford now has 46 passing TDs and 5 rushing TDs on the season. Bradford only has 6 interceptions on the season giving him an obscene 7.67:1 TD:INT ratio. He is the best player on the best offense in the nation, and deserves to be the second sophomore in a row to win the Heisman Trophy.
- I was disappointed to see Virginia Tech beat Virginia. I usually root for V-Tech because they are a fellow land grant school, but I wanted Georgia Tech to win the ACC Coastal Division and I needed a Virginia win for that to happen. Oh well, just more motivation for Georgia Tech next season.

i still dont know how georgia tech beat georgia….i thought the SEC was way too fast for the option, at least thats what the press claims

their incredible team speed was overwhelming
they were so fast, they kept overrunning plays
Paul Johnson deserves serious consideration for National Coach of the Year.

i totally agree
its kinda funny, in the age of the spread, johnson is “radical” by going “conservative” with the option. watching g-tech run the flexbone like that was a thing of beauty. he is a great coach. i know college station is tired of the option attack because of fran but it would have been different if yall had johnson. i’m happy yall didnt go after him. all those aggie running backs running johnson’s flexbone would have been downright scary

Without prompting by
me, because I know that BG loves him some Paul Johnson, my Dad said the other night that he wished that the Aggies would have hired him rather than Sherman. Great minds think alike.

Johnson was someone I thought we should look at
I just didn’t think anyone would be in favor of hiring him b/c of their low opinion of Fran’s scheme. I never had a problem with Fran’s scheme, just his playcalling and personnel use.
If I really thought about what Johnson could have done with Lane, Goodson, Smith, Stephens, and Gray, I might break down and cry. A simplified blocking scheme would have really helped us on offensive line.
We still wouldn’t have had a defense, which means we wouldn’t have won 9 games like G-Tech did, but we would have been more competitive in most of our games, and I think we’d have won at least 6 and been bowl eligible.

well
not to sound like my highschool coach or anything, but, in theory, with a ball controll offense like the option, you shorten the game and your defense plays less if you have sustained drives. if johnson had come to a&m, i think yall could have won 8 games

Maybe if our starting LT from last year had not had such a hankering for weed, we would have won more games this year. We just need to move forward. Evidently GTech has the most talented DL in the nation so that is nice to walk into.

I'm still angry CSPD listens to drug dealers before they listen to our football players
since when is a drug dealer a sympathetic figure?
Yemi should have just told the police, “I heard this guy was dealing drugs, and I know that is WRONG, because of all the D.A.R.E. programs I saw in grade school, so I went over there to tell him to stop this foolish, illegal lifestyle that will just lead you to nowhere, like my D.A.R.E. leader said, and before I knew what was happening, the guy jumped out a window.” Then the police pin a medal on his chest, and we still have our starting LT.

The ACC is a joke.
I can’t believe one of those trash teams is going to win it. VPI and Boston College don’t deserve to be in the BCS. They have done nothing this year. Boise St. should be ahead of them.
