Another Reason To Despise Fran - Not That You Need One...

I was talking to a friend of mine who recently had an hour-long conversation with a high ranking official in the Texas A&M Athletic Department. They were discussing issues in the football program, particularly in the past season. The AD official mentioned that the cupboard was basically left bare after Fran left (I know, shock, shock, shock), but that wasn't on of the worst things he did. My friend asked him to name one of them, and their conversation went something like this:

ADO = Athletic Department Official    MF = My Friend

ADO: "You know who Robert Griffin is?"

MF: "Yes, the quarterback at Baylor?"

ADO: "Right. Well, he wanted to come to A&M, badly. We were recruiting him, and he was ready to come here, and then Fran got wrapped up in something else he felt was more important, and put him on the back burner. Griffin waited around, and then he committed to Houston, eventually following Art Briles to Baylor."

MF: "Wow."

We could have had Robert Griffin on our roster. Instead of looking at three more years of this kid being at Waco and pissed as us for not taking him seriously, we could have had him on our team. I am at a loss to understand how a coach could watch tape of this kid, and just so easily take him for granted. Looking past Fran, I bet Pat Henry was pissed off, because he missed out on having a world-class hurdler on his squad.

Way to go, Fran.

Every year we could discuss how we didnt offer a player that we should have or missed on someone that wanted to go to A&M.

Michael Crabtree told his HS coaches that his top 2 choices were Texas and A&M, but neither of them offered him as a WR.

Did we miss on Griffin III, absolutely. But I bet Texas, LSU, OU or any number of other programs would have loved to have Mr. Griffins services after seeing what he did on the field this year. But none of them offered him a scholarship either…so I guess Mack, Miles and Stoops should all be called into question.

oh by the way, Sam Bradford was a 3-star recruit. We offered him a scholarship, but Texas, LSU, Nebraska and OSU didnt…shouldnt we give Fran and Co. some credit for identifying an underrated player?

Crabtree was hurt by academic issues

apparently the whole issue was a mistake on the part of his HS, but I remember his recruitment b/c I watched him play in HS, and that was the knock on him, that teams weren’t sure if they could get him in academically.

yes, there were def. academic issues

and I believe your right about them partly, if not mostly, the fault of Duncanville HS.

but the fact remains that schools like A&M, LSU, Texas and OU thought of him as a DB.

I wanted A&M to offer him as a LB but we never offered him. He went to Dallas Carter BTW. Every coach in Texas should be questioned about why they did not offer Robert Griffin. Hell, the recruiting gurus should be asked why he wasn’t ranked much higher. How do you not recognize a QB who leads a team deep into the playoffs and is one of the top hurdlers in the nation? That has to stand out on the field!
