Big 12 statistical leaders in offense are telling
Through two games, the statistical leaders in rushing offense is Oklahoma State, averaging 276.5 yards per game (ypg) rushing, while Texas Tech is the leader in passing offense, averaging 416.5 ypg.
The top four offensive teams in the Big 12, as determined by total offense, are Missouri (578.5 ypg), Oklahoma (542.5 ypg), Oklahoma State (542.5), and Texas Tech (530 ypg). All of these teams are 2-0. All of these teams run at least some spread concepts in their offense (OU, Oklahoma State), or are full-blown archetypes of the spread (Texas Tech, Missouri).
Texas A&M is currently last in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game (112.5), and last in the Big 12 in passing yards per game (157.0). Texas A&M is also running a pro-style West Coast Offense as their offensive scheme, the only team in the Big 12 South to do so. The complexity of running an NFL scheme has been vividly recapped by the struggles Nebraska has had to be relevant the past few years under Bill Callahan. One wonders if we're not headed down the same path if we continue with this scheme. So far, the statistics are not on our side.

Right now we are running basic pro-set offensive plays. We have not seen a lot of WC offense basics like passes to the RBs in the flat and passes to the TE. I am hoping to see these WC concepts, and a lot of misdirection in the Miami game. Our offense has been very vanilla during the first two games. I am hoping that this is by design. If not, we are in for a long and boring season.

I think our fundamental problem with a pro-style offense is not with the scheme itself but with our weaknesses in personnel. In particular, we simply lack the big time wide receivers required to make it click and the offensive line needed to give the QB time to set and throw. We also have no real tight end, a key position in the pro-scheme.
I agree we don't have the basic personnel to run a WCO-pro scheme
which is one of the reasons I think we’re foolish for doing what we’re doing.
I think we need to adapt our scheme to our personnel, not the other way around.
