Tuesday Morning Football Links and Notes
- Randy Riggs has a nice article on starting center Kevin Matthews. I plan to take a more in-depth look at Matthew's play at a later time, but I really like his father's view on football. Many fathers could do well to emulate him. Worth your time.
- Jimmy Trammel of the Tulsa World touches on R.C. Slocum's induction into the A&M Athletic Hall of Fame. Trammel takes the tradition view that we fired RC before we should have. I think writers who believe this neglect to mention the decline of the program in Slocum's final years, and the desire by many Aggie fans to not just have a winning season, but to win championships. The impression I get from many writers is that A&M should just have been happy to be better than average, and left it at that.
- Chuck Carlton touches on Sherman's decision to go to Keondra Smith in short yardage. I briefly wondered about the call at the time, but I wonder if Sherman is trying to send a message to Jorvorskie Lane: Don't do your job blocking, you won't run the ball.
- The Houston Chronicle's Terrance Harris looks at A&M using a two-quarterback system. I was pleased to see that Johnson set a passing record for an Aggie QB in their first start, and I love his 'team first' attitude. He just wants to be on the field. Tidbit not focused on in the article is that third string QB/starting WR Ryan Tannehill appears to be healthy again, and should be good to go against Army.
- DMN's Chuck Carlton also weighs in on the QB quandary. I really hope the media realizes that this isn't texas, and we're not going to have a split team or fanbase divided over who starts at QB.
- Lee Grimes will be okay, and Jeff Fuller just had the wind knocked out of him against Miami. This is a relief, b/c I was worried about both players when they went down.
- SAEN's Brent Zwerneman notes that Jerrod Johnson appears to be a better gameday player than practice player.
- The Star-Telegram focuses on Johnson's sprained shoulder against Miami, ignoring the fact that he may have given his best performance AFTER he was injured in the second quarter, leading the two TD drives in the 3rd/4th quarter.
