Dirty Dozen Rankings II: Electric Boogaloo

Time for my second weekly ranking of Big 12 teams. Conference play hasn't started, so reality hasn't set in yet for some teams. Previous weeks ranking in parenthesis.

  1. Oklahoma: (1) Beat the hell out of Idle last weekend.
  2. Missouri: (2) Lack of defense almost cost them against Buffalo
  3. texas: (3) Just waiting for the fall that will come after the OU game.
  4. Oklahoma State: (5) Because they would outscore Colorado.
  5. Texas Tech: (6) Dentists say too many cupcakes causes cavities.
  6. Colorado: (4) I thought they didn't win as much as WVU lost.
  7. Nebraska: (8) Virginia Tech shouldn't be much of a test.
  8. Kansas: (9) They struggled with Sam Houston State.
  9. Kansas State: (7) Ugly loss to Louisville.
  10. Baylor: (10)  Nice loss on national television to UConn.
  11. Iowa State: (11) Nice comeback attempt against UNLV.
  12. Texas A&M: (12) Blowout loss to Miami means they're still 12th.

Notes: Oklahoma still appears to be the class of this conference. Missouri's lack of a defense is going to bite them in a game this season, probably when they least expect it. Maybe in the Kansas game? texas should beat Arkansas, although I think the hogs will make it a game for at least a half on hatred alone. texas' porous secondary versus Arkansas' toothless spread offense should be interesting to watch. I was very disappointed in Colorado's performance against West Virginia, so much so that I dropped them two spots. Colorado was almost beaten by two players, Noel Devine and Pat White. Oklahoma State has a chance to prove me correct by beating CU in November. This week, they have a decent test in Troy. I expect State to roll up the points after their blowout loss on the road last season. Tech moves up just b/c I was that disappointed in Colorado. Kansas averaged 3.4 yds per carry aganst a I-AA team; that isn't going to get it done in conference play. Kansas State is saved from being called the worst team in the Big 12 North by Iowa State. Baylor showed that they're still Baylor by losing to UConn. With apologies to Rob Lunn, UConn's defense played poorly. The game was a contest of which defense would give out first and Baylor, being Baylor, quickly capitulated. Iowa State makes everyone else in the Big 12 North look good. They looked horrible and slow against UNLV.  A&M showed signs of life (and even improvement) against Miami, but a blowout loss to an average team is still a blowout loss to an average team.

for the record...

…Mizzou gave up all of 286 yards vs Buffalo, 61 of which came on the last drive as time was expiring and the game was wrapped up. Ball security almost cost Mizzou (though let’s not overstate things—we still won by 3 TDs), but the defense was fine. I realize we carry the same “all offense, no defense” stigma that Tech has, and we certainly earned some of that in the Illinois game, but in the last two weeks against not-great-but-solid offenses, Mizzou’s done just fine.

fair enough

I was looking at points scored and not yardage.

I base my opinion of your defense not just on the Illinois game, but from what I saw last season and the year before.

I’m taking a wait-and-see attitude with Missouri’s defense.

Last Year...

…MU was one of the best defenses in the Big 12 during conference play. Check it out if you want, but for the MU defense was strong within the conference and it is far better at this point in the season than it was a year ago. I think Illinois will surprise many of the Big 10 Teams with its offense at times, so be careful how you judge a defense. I think we should all learn a lesson from USC on how to not over hype or underestimate some of the defensive and offensive performances in the first few games.
