Two Games To Define The Season

The next two games on our schedule, a non-conference game against Army and a conference game against Oklahoma State, may tell us everything we need to know about our team for the rest of the season.

Army is our final non-conference game and - after entering Kyle Field with an 0-3 record with losses to Temple, New Hampshire, and Akron - shouldn't prove too much of a challenge. Army has scored 20 points, total, on the season while giving up 87. Quite frankly, we should blow them out on Saturday. This game is as close to a guaranteed win as you can find on A&M's schedule this season. We need the win, too, because we're 0-2 at home so far this season.

Oklahoma State will be more of a challenge. We'll be opening conference play on the road in Stillwater a week from Saturday. Oklahoma State boasts a terrific offense, averaging 50.7 points (#5 nationally right now) and 552.3 yds per game (also #5 nationally). Our defense will have their work cut out for them, and our offense will need to keep scoring to keep up. Fortunately for us, I think this Oklahoma State defense can be had. They given up 13 points to a horrible Washington State team, 37 to a solid Houston Cougars squad, and 13 to I-AA Missouri State. Their current stats on defense look respectable (291.7 yds per game, 21 pt per game), but we have to remember that they've only played one semi-legit D-IA opponent in Houston. Washington State may be one of the worst teams in college football, period, and Missouri State is a I-AA bought win. In their game against Houston, they gave up 483 yds of total offense, including 387 yds passing. If we have our passing game in gear, we should be able to move the ball and score on Okie State. If we can keep scoring and our defense can get some stops, we can win the game.

We'll know what kind of a team we have after out next two games. We are now 1/4 of the way through the season, and we still don't have an identity yet. Our final non-conference game and our conference opener will go a long way towards telling us who we are this year.

That we are now relying on THESE two games to “define the season” does more to define the season than anything else could.

well, we have to start somewhere

I think if we struggle against Army and get blown out against Okie State, we’ll know not to expect too much for the rest of the season.

Conversely, if we blowout Army, and are competitive with or even beat Okie State, we’ll know there is hope for this season. That is what I mean by these games ‘defining’ our season. I’m not tlaking about saying whether our season is a success or failure, I’m just tlaking about telling us what to expect for the rest of the year.
