Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

Upset Alert: The Cotton Bowl

"Typical Tech" is rearing its ugly head again, as the favored Red Raiders of Texas Tech are losing to Ole Miss, 38-21. This wouldn't bother me if they weren't embarrassing the Big 12 in the process of losing the game. Dropped passes, poor playcalls (a QB sneak on 4th and 4? Really?), terrible blocking, poor tackling, just overall shoddy play.

Since Ole Miss is easily the third-best team in the SEC, if not fourth-best behind Georgia, this performance is embarrassing. The SEC is down this year, very down, and they are taking it to Tech.

I've always known that Ruffin McNeill's defense was overrated, and the credit he was receiving from the media was undeserved, because Tech's defense is still mediocre at its core, but their performance today has been pathetic.

Update: Tech just scored a TD to make it 38-28 with plenty of time to go in the 4th quarter. Maybe they'll make a game of it.

Houston Nutt did a masterful job getting his players ready for this game.

Typical Tech? Well, I guess you’re right about that. A winning season and a bowl game every year since the Big 12 started is in fact typical for us.

Losing today and ending up 11-2 sure beats the hell out of being the new Baylor (no offense to Baylor intended).

don't be coy

If you are a Tech fan, you know exactly what “typical Tech” means. It means choking in the big game (OU) and/or dropping games to inferior teams (Mississippi).

Making a bowl game is irrelevant if you don’t show up and play.

Double-Edged Sword...............

p(.1st – TT barely bothered to show up – at least consistently. And the coaching staff left their coaching skills back at the hotel. QB sneak on 4th & 4? Not since Jr. High or against Podunk U. has that worked.

p(.2nd – Probably not as important, but I think it’s important that we understand Ol’ Miss didn’t need any help. * WHAT WAS WITH THE OFFICIATING CREW??* All day, the crew made sure that Tech was playing from the bottom of the barrel. Case in point – the Linesman was running right alongside Green on the punt return when he stepped out of bounds, not once, but twice, before “scoring.” The replays show him looking RIGHT AT Green’s foot as it hit the sideline. Seems he just didn’t want to make the call………

P(.Another case in point: Mississippi gets 2 penalties the entire game? For only 15 yards?

P(.And another: The Umpire makes a holding call when TT is inside the 15 on a crucial play, but can’t seem to identify the TT lineman who did the deed. Careful replay – or NUMEROUS replays – shows no one holding. Curious.

P(.Want another? TT Center, #71, Hamby, asks the Umpire to penalize Miss. for simulating snap counts on defense, but TT is the one penalized for delay of game.

P(.And another? Hamby is again penalized for striking a Miss. player in the facemask, which he did. It came, however, after the Miss. player was in Hamby’s face, taunting him, very obviously. Any penalty on Miss. for taunting? You got it…………not a thing.

P(.I’m no TT fan. I’m a NM Lobo guy, and believe me, that’s tuff’ to admit. I just think it’s terrible when game officials are so obvious in their calls against one team or another. The Rebels were doing just fine without the striped shirt help.

Tech has not been in a bowl game (nor eligible for a bowl game) every year since the inception of the Big 12 because their were on probation one year (for not understanding how to determine the eligibility of their own athletes) and therefore ineligible to go to a bowl. When we fail to win a conference game, people can start comparing us to Baylor.
