SB Nation Big 12 Roundtable - 2009 Season - Week 9

This is the ninth installment of the 2009 Big 12 Roundtable, a weekly feature during the season. Each week, an SB Nation Big 12 blogger will host the Roundtable and submit a series of questions to all Big 12 bloggers. This week, the Roundtable is being hosted by Rock M Nation. Listed below are I Am The 12th Man's answers.

1. This question was posed by Rock Chalk Talk's Denverjhawk in Rock M Nation's Live Thread on Saturday: Could a Big 12 North all-star team compete with and/or beat texas?

Not only could a North all-star team compete with texas, they would beat it handily. texas struggled mightily against Oklahoma for one simple reason: the Sooners had the defensive front to manhandle texas' offensive line and the defensive front seven to shut down the texas offense. Take Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska, and you've shut down texas' running game with one player. Suh would also give you the pass rush to keep pressure on Colt McCoy, and force the Human Turnover Machine into doing what he does best, thrown an interception. On offense, receivers like Kansas' Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier, Missouri's Danario Alexanders, and running backs like Kansas State's Daniel Thomas and Iowa State's Alexander Robinson would give the texas defense fits. The Big 12 North would be able to put together a balanced attack on offense, and that would give the texas defense fits. Beat texas' defense, their offense can't take up the slack. Beat texas' defense, you beat texas.

Star-divide

2. Forget ACC Roulette. For our intents and purposes, the Big 12 North is now the most entertaining battle of supremacy in mediocrity. Handicap what happens with the division from here.

Kansas State will beat Kansas, get upset by Missouri, and then upset Nebraska in Lincoln to take the Big 12 North in a huge shocker. Iowa State will fall to Oklahoma State, but beat Colorado and Missouri to finish second in the North.

3. Is Oklahoma back on track after taking care of business against Kansas? Their national aspirations are obviously done, but can we expect to see a fairly dominant Sooner team down the stretch?

We can expect to see a good Sooner team, but I'm not sure how dominant they will be. I am still not sold on their offense, and think they have one or two more losses remaining on their schedule, minimum. I think their game against Nebraska in Lincoln will be a defensive struggle which they will win, but I think they may drop a shootout to OSU in Norman.

4. Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Kansas State managed to completely shred the transitive property. What did the games between these schools tell us about these teams?

Quite simply, you don't want to play a road game against a team that has just been blown out in their previous game, because a cornered animal always bites. A&M may have found the answer to some questions about their offensive line, especially at the guard positions. Kansas State is now believing fully in Snyder's system again, and playing good football.

5. Did texas find its mojo in Missouri, and does Oklahoma State have enough to take the Horns down in Stillwater this week?

No, texas didn't find its mojo, they simply played a team that is tanking right now in Missouri. Missouri's leader is their QB, Blaine Gabbert, and with Gabbert injured right now, their offense is struggling. With no offense to lead them, they were sitting ducks for texas' defense. Missouri's defense is nothing to write home about outside of Sean Weatherspoon, so texas' offense looked better than they really are against them.

I do think texas will beat Oklahoma State in Stillwater, and I don't even think it will be close. OSU doesn't believe they can beat texas, and that mental edge will help texas. I do look forward to watching Joe Wickline's offensive line go up against texas' DL. If Oklahoma State can run the ball, they will make it a game, but I don't think that will happen.

6. Power Poll! Who wins on a neutral field?

  1. texas longhorns
  2. Oklahoma St. Cowboys
  3. Oklahoma Sooners
  4. Kansas St. Wildcats
  5. Texas A&M Aggies
  6. Texas Tech Red Raiders
  7. Iowa St. Cyclones
  8. Nebraska Cornhuskers
  9. Missouri Tigers
  10. Colorado Buffaloes
  11. Kansas Jayhawks
  12. Baylor Bears

Bold as hell, but I like it!

tu has played one good game outta seven. I have to think the other 6 or more indicative of what kind of team they have. I still think they lose a regular season game somewhere. ISU beat NU without their starting RB and QB. Bigtime kudos to Paul Rhoads who has them playing hard in every game.

Whatever it is, they are finding ways to win.

Call it playing down to their competition or whatever, but they haven’t really been challenged at all this year, except to some extent in the OU game. I don’t know what to make of UT, though I’m pretty sure I’m not impressed with Colt McCoy. If he wins the Heisman because it’s simply “his turn,” (as I have heard in the media multiple times), I’ll be pissed.
