Random Big 12 Conference Thoughts

  • Anyone else still get the feeling that texas hasn't been tested yet? I don't understand the media contention that their offense is getting 'untracked' when they can't break 300 yards of total offense against Oklahoma State.
  • Nebraska's offense is doing a terrific job of wasting a great defense this season. I haven't watched them enough to know what all of their issues are, but you'd thnk with a defense like they have, they'd be able to just line it up and run power at the opposing defense all day, and they'd score enough to win games with that defense. Maybe their issue is on the offensive line....?
  • If Kansas State ends up winning the Big 12 North, there are going to be a lot of reporters who look stupid. Remember the guy who asked Bill Snyder if the task of rebuilding the Wildcat program was so huge, it might kill him?
  • The texas-Oklahoma State game felt a lot like the 2005 Tech-texas game. You had a highly ranked texas team facing an upstart that thought it was ready to compete with the big boys; just like in '05, the upstart found out quickly it didn't belong on the same field. The good news for OSU is that '05 Tech team used that experience to propel them to an 11-win season in 2008. The bad news for State is that their version of Michael Crabtree, WR Dez Bryant, probably won't be around next season to help State take that next step.

Star-divide

  • Missouri's performance against Colorado may have saved their season; they were beginning to approach the point of no-return as a team. They stepped back from the ledge and earned a nice, solid blowout victory over the Buffaloes, on the road.
  • A&M has always struggled in Boulder; hopefully we can break that streak this year.
  • Watching the replays of Big Ten games on the Big Ten Network has me convinced we need a similar network for the Big 12, if only to show the games that are not televised during the weekend.
  • Of course, if we had a Big 12 Network, I'm sure we'd get complaints from Big 12 North fans that there is too much programming involving Texas schools on it.
  • If Kansas State wins the Big 12 North, I wonder if that will be enough to get Bill Snyder national coach of the year recognition?
  • Judging by fan reactions in Waco, Art Briles' team may have taken a step back from where they were last season. Losing Robert Griffin to injury was a big hit, but they should still be able to play some solid football, even without him. Perhaps Baylor is just showing how much Griffin covered up their other deficiencies?
  • Now featuring a defense that can't stop the run, Kansas needs to hope they can beat Nebraska in two weeks just to become bowl eligible. This is quite a step down for a team expected to contend, if not outright win, the Big 12 North.
  • Texas Tech now has two weeks to listen to their 'fat little girlfriends' tell them how terrific they are for beating Kansas before they face Oklahoma State on the road. We'll see if Leach can keep their attention this time.
  • If this season has proven anything, it is that yes, even a 7-11 clerk can pile up yardage in Texas Tech's Air Raid offense. What it has also proven, though, is that it takes more than a 7-11 clerk to win with that offense. With a constantly changing offensive line failing to gel, scholarship quarterbacks Taylor Potts and Seth Doege have looked like 7-11 clerks trying to run a college offense at times.
  • Jerrod Johnson is only two TD passes away from breaking his own school record for TD passes in a season, which he set last season with 21.

As to Texas getting "untracked"

the total yardage stats are misleading, as Texas lost 3 potential drives to turnovers (Shipley’s fumbled punt and 2 pick 6’s) as well as turning off the offense in the 4th quarter. The 1st Team offense had 3 TD’s, 2 FG’s, and 3 punts on it’s 8 drives, and only ran 48 plays. Yards per play might be a more informative metric, and the 1st Teamers posted 5.33 yards per play. Not bad production at all, you just have to go a little beyond the obvious stats.

Agree for the most part,

especially about Texas. I still think their offense is hiding behind their defense. If you look at their schedule, their first “real” win was against the Pokes, who probably have the best non-conference win against struggling Georgia. I hope A&M has beats the longhorns, because they could end up doing damage similar to what the Buckeyes did to Big X conference when they got their pants pulled down by the SEC in the Natl Championship game.

I could be wrong, of course, but looking at their resume so far, I dont think they are at a level where they could compete in the Natl Championship game. In fact, I would even say that their team this time last year was way stronger than the team they have right now.

by maroonblood on Nov 2, 2009 5:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree. Their offense is a little hyped up. Defense is carrying UT so far. I quickly ran through their offensive numbers in the major games (UT: 275 yrds, OSU: 277), (UT: 269; OU: 311), (UT: 340; Tech: 414). I am not counting the North teams and the non conference teams here because the competition there was very week. So in the Big XII South league games each of their losing offenses have outgained them in terms of yardage, which says something about their offense being less of a factor than their defense. Good observation maroonblood and beergut

Maybe it's because...

Texas didn’t need anything from its offense to win. The pick 6’s help keep Colt drinking gatorade, and from what I have read, the media seems more impressed with Texas’ defense.

Maybe you guys should kind of stop worrying so much about Texas and remember what happened when OSU went to Kyle Field. And then what happened when Texas went to Stillwater.

That’s what I would be concerned about, if I was an aggy of course.

by prince8846 on Nov 2, 2009 11:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think anyone is "worrying" about texas

we’re discussing Big 12 football, and texas is part of the Big 12, so we’ll discuss how they are performing.

I swear, as a fanbase, texas fans care more about what other people are thinking and saying about them than they do what they think about themselves.

Incorrect...

I, as a Texas graduate, still love it that the aggys are obsessed with Texas. That’s why I roam around this blog; to see what the aggys are complaining about this time. I understand that Texas is your top rival, but really, the aggys are always talking about Texas. I understand the point you were trying to make, yet, you still were complaining. Texas smashed an OSU team in Stillwater that you guys lost to at home, and the thing you bring up is how the media is praising their offense when they don’t even break 300 yds of offense. Mack Brown is a classy guy (unlike stoopsie) and realizes there is no need to pile on points at the end. From what I read this morning in the DMN, it sounds like Sherman is of the same mold, which I commend.

The aggys put up over 500 yds of offense on Iowa State, yet only managed 35 points. Against OSU, you almost got to 400 yds, and only had 31 points and lost.

So, would you rather have put up less than 300 yards and played the game Texas did, or put up just under 400 and lose?

No need to run up the score and total yardage when the game is in hand, and you should know that, if you are intelligent. IMO, the post should have read, “Texas doesn’t break 300 yds of offense and mauls OSU. We got ourselves a real challenge on Thanksgiving”

by prince8846 on Nov 3, 2009 4:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What bull!
the thing you bring up is how the media is praising their offense when they don’t even break 300 yds of offense.Mack Brown is a classy guy (unlike stoopsie) and realizes there is no need to pile on points at the end.
No need to run up the score and total yardage when the game is in hand, and you should know that, if you are intelligent.

Have you even been following your team??! Since you apparently have no clue about what you are saying let me get you upto speed how your offense has done in the second half and fourth quarters:
UL- 59-20, Second half 21 pts, Fourth quarter – 14 pts
Wyo- 41-10, Second half 28 pts, Fourth quarter – 10 pts
Tech- 34-24 Second half 24, Fourth quarter – 10 points
UTEP 64-7, Second Half 17, Fourth quarter- 7 pts
UC 38-14, Second Half- 28, Fourt Quarter- 14 points.

I wont bother putting up the two games where your offense actually had its best games. Your team has been scoring plenty in the second half, and if not for those second half comebacks you would be losing. The even sadder part is that a big chunk of those points have been scored by your defense.

So the reason your offensive stats are poor is not because “Classy” Mack is not scoring in the 4th, its because your offense has been stinking it up. Before posting something, atleast get your facts right, even if wishful and fairy tale thinking seems to be the rule in Longhorn country.

by maroonblood on Nov 3, 2009 5:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So...

It;s Mack’s fault when he is running Dive left and dive right that the other team can’t stop them?
ULM – first game of season, Gilbert got to run the first team offense which was nice.
Wyoming – only winning 13-10 at half, so I don’t see what your argument is there.
Tech – 10-3 at half, and it was close the entire game. Seriously? Are you really making that argument?
UTEP – they were just unprepared and got shellacked. I’ll give you that one.
CU – losing at halftime, and really didn’t pile on points at the end, one of the fourth quarter touchdowns was a punt return.

Looks like you should take the extra step and do more research if you are going to refute someone’s claims.

And you really aren’t going to convince anyone that Mack is running up the score, or adding on extra style points and yardage. Trust me. I wish he piled on more points on Wyoming, CU, and Mizzou. Just because you score in the second half and the 4th quarter doesn’t mean that you run up the score.

The only rule in Longhorn country is to play your best and win. Something you may want to adopt. There is a reason that “We’re Texas” and you are just some little agro school in the worst city in Texas.

by prince8846 on Nov 3, 2009 11:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I am assuming you are intelligent...

You make the assertion that your offense is not putting up better numbers because they are not “piling it on” at the end, which is clearly untrue. I wasn’t even arguing that your coach is running up the score, because he clearly is not in the position to do so because of his offense’s poor play in the first half’s. Your offense is subpar this season, albeit improving, and if you cant acknowledge that, you my poor Longhorn friend, who apparently seek validation in belittling other schools and towns, are clearly in denial.

Stay classy Longhorn, hard as it may be, there is hope even for one such as you….

by maroonblood on Nov 4, 2009 12:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No.

You aggys are so much fun. So entertaining! It’s as if you can’t read, or just can’t comprehend something without someone explaining it to you letter by letter.

Trust me, I know our offense has taken a huge step back from last year. But if you actually watch football, and then know what’s happening while football is being played, you can clearly see Texas pulling up on the reigns. If it was our goal to put up more than 300 yds a game, trust me it would be easy. Our goal is to win games. If you guys want to keep whining about our offense, and how the media loves us, or how our offense is “subpar” (although the leading the nation in scoring doesn’t seem subpar to me…) go ahead! It’s not like we aren’t used to the obsessions aggys have with Texas.

And I do like belittling college station. It seriously is one of the worst towns I have ever been to!

Here is a translation of prince8846’s message:

tu may back their way into a national title game with their weak schedule, so be it. That is the system we live with right now. Zac Robinson has never played big in a big game so the tu score was to be expected. The Big 12 is down this year, just like the rest of college football. Humorously, the teams that are playing the best may well be Cincinatti, Boise St, and TCU. I still think tu will drop a game somewhere. It is hard to win a mnc with no running game, even with that weak schedule.

by miketag on Nov 3, 2009 2:38 AM CST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Mike,

The schedule is not entirely Texas’ fault. We were supposed to have Utah and Arkansas on the schedule this year but they both backed out. As to the conference schedule, not our fault that the Big 12 sucks this year. Not sure how going 13-0 is “backing in” to anything, but I guess that is the Aggie perspective.

As to the “tu” score being expected, Beergut had Okie St. winning that game at several different points this season. Maybe you should fill him in when you’ve got such a read on things.

by ctex80 on Nov 3, 2009 8:01 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

ctex I don’t think there is anyone here that is claiming that it’s tu’s fault. We are merely making an observation that tu has not been tested yet and hence they are still a suspect with regards to whether they can finish the season without dropping a game.

by aggierevival on Nov 3, 2009 10:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He also predicted tu would win last week on BON

by miketag on Nov 3, 2009 8:12 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Would you have the same argument if A&M was undefeated this year right now? What your huge out of conference win would have been Arkansas?

Very easy to condemn a schedule as being “too soft” when you can’t even handle your own.

by prince8846 on Nov 3, 2009 4:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Our schedule is pretty soft even with Arkiesaw and that is a big reason we will likely go bowling while playing 17 true freshmen

by miketag on Nov 3, 2009 8:15 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know.

Arkansas and K-State both have turned out to be quite a bit more stout than preseason pundits believed. Not that it matters since they both crushed us.

i thinks its more of

tu fans are starting to get nervous about thanksgiving and that there is a good chance for them to get beat.

why else would they pay attention to what the A&M blog says. i mean ask any of them we are not their rivals.

There's something spiritual about baseball — like Mother Nature," Garrido said. "You don't mess with it. And I think before a player can really believe in it, he has to experience it."

It's not that I take the trolls personally...

I just really don’t understand why people enjoy doing it? What is the purpose of prince8846 posting “There is a reason that "We’re Texas" and you are just some little agro school in the worst city in Texas”? Absolutely no point, other than to be an ass, so I wonder why he is here in the first place.

by FuturePants on Nov 4, 2009 9:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently tu recognizes that their toughest remaining test is on the Thanksgiving day. I have a few buddies from high school that are longhorns and from talking to them i gather that they recognize us as the biggest obstacles between now and the National Championship. So, probably its this feeling of insecurity and might i say vulnerability that is making some of their fans say classless disrespectful things about us. But then again a fair share of tu fans are always classless.

by YUMC on Nov 4, 2009 12:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I hesitate to say this, because you'll probably overreact

But Texas fans saying that A&M is our biggest challenge until the Big 12 title is more about the weakness of the remaining schedule than how good Horns fans think A&M is. Texas has already cleared its toughest stretch of the season (neutral site Oklahoma, on the road against Mizzou, on the road against OSU). You’re being compared to UCF, Baylor, and a spiraling Kansas team who is coming to Austin. Longhorn fans are realistic enough to know that anyone can lose at anytime, and surely rivalry games often feature the most upsets, but saying that A&M is our “toughest” remaining test doesn’t necessarily mean Texas fans are insecure about the game.

I enjoy roaming around the aggy sports nation just as plenty of aggys enjoy roaming around on Texas sites.

But I will say, I can get carried away as anyone else can. I just read some things that are just plain incorrect, and it makes me cringe and want to set people straight.

Since this is an aggy page, I should realize the obvious bias and bite my tongue on more than one occasion. But seriously, setting you guys straight is such a joy.

by prince8846 on Nov 4, 2009 11:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

OH COME ON!

You guys routinely use “tu” or “t-sips” or all the other names you have for the Horns.

And you are getting your feathers rumpled over aggy?

by prince8846 on Nov 5, 2009 1:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Have to agree with Prince here

Aggy is no different than t.u. or “texas.”

by ambivalent on Nov 5, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

it has nothing to do with feathers being rumpled

I just want to know why you can’t spell “Aggie”

by Beergut on Nov 5, 2009 4:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

Longhorn nation has been wondering why aggys haven’t realized that tu = Tulsa University. I could pose the question to you as to why you can’t capitalize “Texas” but I know its all in good fun

by prince8846 on Nov 5, 2009 10:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I've explained this before

texas = school in Austin

Texas = the Lone Star State

by Beergut on Nov 6, 2009 5:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously?

You can offer up whatever excuse you want, but that one is a little interesting. By this same logic, you wouldn’t capitalize kansas, nebraska, missouri, oklahoma etc.

However, this is not the case.

It really doesn’t bother me, I just find that excuse interesting. And instead of aggy would you prefer I say m&a?

by prince8846 on Nov 6, 2009 1:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

if I ofte talked about the states of Missouri, Oklahoma, or Kansas

you’d have a point

I don’t, hence no need for a naming convention

by Beergut on Nov 6, 2009 3:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude...

Whatever. If you would just admit you are doing it, it would be respectable. Just like I admit to saying “aggy”. In this particular post, you refer to several of these states/schools. You do a weekly column on the rankings of the Big12. But whatever helps you sleep at night there bud.
