Ags Outscored By tu, 49-39: Postgame Reaction Thread

We were a couple of plays away of making that a hell of a game. Really, if our defense could tackle that could have been a hell of a win. I give credit to Colt McCoy for that long TD run because I did not know he had that kind of speed. The rest of the numbers do not impress me too much because I think Tyler Hansen put up similar numbers. Does anyone think he is a hypesman candidate? Best football player I have seen this year is still Suh from NU. Have to give credit to our WRs for making some great catches and Jerrod Johnson for playing a great game. Offense matched them score for score. An interception in the endzone and a missed chipshot FG did us in. I am excited for our future because we had a lot of sophomores and freshmen out there making big plays. We just need to shore up our OL and DL.

Star-divide

It will be interesting to see if NU gives tu a game. I think the NU defense will prevent tu from running the ball. The question is will Helu be able to run against the tu defense. As long as NU does not turn the ball over and sticks with the run like we did, they have a good shot. tu's defense obviously tired late in the game and we were able to run on them more. I am disappointed that we let a golden opportunity get away from us. We need to regroup and go out and win our bowl game.

Good game tonight. I was rooting for you guys.

As much as I dislike, A&M, I don’t hate the Ags like I do the Horns.

gave us a hell of a game, you can be sure muschamps going to be kicking some ass this week. your offense is going to be nasty next year, and if your defense gets a lil better, are gonna have a hell of a season.

jerrod johnson is alot better than most of us gave him credit for, his passes were on the money, his receivers snagged everything in sight, and over coverage was porous as fuck.

by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 26, 2009 11:44 PM CST reply actions

Our receivers definitely stepped it up. Caught pretty much everything near them

by miketag on Nov 27, 2009 12:09 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I would argue

the biggest difference in the game was the complete mismatch between the back 7 for A&M and UT’s skill guys. Guys were in position and then couldn’t touch anyone because they were physically unable to match up or they’d get runover for a TD. It explains why the A&M special teams were poor this year—they don’t have any guys.

I’d be pretty excited if I’m an Aggie fan. I wasn’t sure you had the right coach before the year started, but I’m starting to think Sherman might work out quite well. A&M’s issue is completely talent related and if the early results from Sherman’s recruiting continue to be promising, I think things will be just fine in College Station.

by DoubleB on Nov 27, 2009 12:45 AM CST reply actions

The A&M offensive line and the overall defense were the biggest concerns coming into the 2009 CFB season. I think that Sherman has mostly figured out the OL woes (getting healthy helps with that) and he has done a great job recruiting the line positions. A&M has a great set of skill players in every position – no worries there.

My biggest concern for 2010 is the defense, particularly the D line. I am not sure that two full recruiting classes (plus the class inherited from Franchione) has been enough to fix the defensive woes. A&M should improve again next year, but will need help to get past the conference big boys and Arkansas.

by ambivalent on Nov 27, 2009 7:42 AM CST up reply actions

That argument would hold water if I hadn’t seen the skill players from CU and KSU do that to us. We simply do not tackle well on defense. Have not since the Arkansas game

by miketag on Nov 27, 2009 12:11 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Our defense

hasn’t tackled well since well before any game this season. Its been several years

by the12thman11 on Nov 27, 2009 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

But that's my point

Players that don’t tackle well generally aren’t very good—they’re out of position because they aren’t athletic enough or they get blown up because they aren’t physical enough. Either way, it doesn’t say much for the Aggies personnel on that side of the ball.

by DoubleB on Nov 27, 2009 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

I understand

but when the QB runs through your entire defense, when you can’t TOUCH guys who you are breaking down to tackle, when a RB gets 6 yards and a TD running over guys—that’s a difference in talent level. That’s not a fundamentals thing . . that’s a “we’re not very good” thing.

This defense ranks 110th in passing defense. I think Kines is a pretty good coordinator and has certainly been around the block and knows what he’s doing. Can they get better? Certainly. But they need a talent infusion to compete against Texas and Oklahoma.

by DoubleB on Nov 27, 2009 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

McCoy ran up the middle on that play

b/c there was no one in the middle of the field b/c they all came from the outside, which was a defensive breakdown. At that point, it was up to safeties and CBs who were down the field and had to come across the field and try to catch McCoy from behind, not an easy task when he already has a head start on you.

On the Tre’ Newton TD run you are referring to, that is a group of people faling to make the tackle, i.e. poor fundamentals. I’ll have to review the play, but I am wondering if some of them were trying to strip the ball, because there was just no excuse not to wrap him up and bring him down.

by Beergut on Nov 27, 2009 6:20 PM CST up reply actions

disagree

unless you think there is a physical mismatch between our skill players and texas’ defensive back 7, too

by Beergut on Nov 27, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

A&M played at an elevated level yesterday against their biggest rival. A&M clearly has a damn good offense that’s only going to be better in 2010. The mistakes on defense were agonizing. The inability of the Ags to tackle had me wanting to scream (oh my god, that sack in the end zone that Moss should have had). The pressure on McCoy was close several times but never enough – I have to give the Texas line a some of the credit there, but I think that it’s mostly a matter of a poor A&M D line. Special teams were mostly going well until that huge KOR for a TD.

All in all it was a game that A&M could have won, but Texas did not make many mistakes and Texas did a fantastic job of capitalizing on the many mistakes A&M made.

by ambivalent on Nov 27, 2009 7:44 AM CST reply actions

Big XII Champ

I think that NU will keep Texas from scoring a ton of points, but they won’t be able to keep Texas from outscoring them. The NU offense has ranged from average to atrocious this year. Texas has had what, one bad game on defense now (against an obviously potent A&M offense)? Obviously NU can make it interesting, but I just don’t see them pulling off anything resembling a close game.

by ambivalent on Nov 27, 2009 7:53 AM CST reply actions

You sir,

are one of the more rational voices over here. Kudos to your team, they played a helluva game. The collection of skill position talent you guys have is incredible, and much better than many Texas fans (myself included) have given you credit for.

wow

I watched that whole game and all I can say is A&M will be badass next year. Is Jerrod a junior this season? I hope so because he is most likely gonna tear us apart again next year unless our defense can play a lot more consistently. I also don’t think I saw a single drop from any receivers…A&M was really playing their heart out that game.

Observations

This was my first shot to get to watch th Aggies play this year. I was very impressed and I am extremely excited about the coming years.

The two biggest things I observed last night had to do with maturity and experience. On the times when A&M made big mistakes the Aggies seemed to have trouble getting back into the game. Texas was able to easily capitalize on our mistakes because we took so long getting our emotions and confidence back up and because the Longhorns are so skilled and experienced in the game. That makes for a bad combination, on our side anyway.

The other thing was our pursuit angles. I don’t know if we are so young or if Texas is just that fast, but it seemed like we missed so many tackles because our defense was taking poor angles to catch the runner. This was especially true on Colt’s run up the gut and also that sack Moss should have had in the endzone, but it was evident the whole game. I think experience playing at the College speed as opposed to the High School speed will flesh out as experience comes.

On the positive side, there were a bunch of young Aggies out there that played with all of their heart. It would be easy to be intimidated when Texas comes in undefeated and jockying for the National Title game but our guys didn’t seem to balk even once at that. They stepped up to the challenge and gave 110%. A team can overcome a lot of obstacles with determination and fight like was observed in the Aggies last night.

Good job Aggies! I was proud to be wearin’ maroon last night.

by Aggie4Christ on Nov 27, 2009 3:03 PM CST reply actions

Pugh has been taking bad pursuit angles for 4 years.

by miketag on Nov 27, 2009 6:32 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

hmmmmmm
This was my first shot to get to watch th Aggies play this year.

Seriously, what took you so long?

I do not agree that we were somehow emotionally hamstrung by mistakes, because we played hard all game long. I didn’t see any lulls where our team seemed to be letting adversity get them down.

As for our poor tackling, that is a fundamental issue, not an isue of angles. We don’t break down correctly, and we try to arm tackle too often.

I was proud to be wearin’ maroon last night.

Not to attack you personally, but this attitude (that I’ve heard from more than just you, A4C) mystifies me. If it takes a stellar effort in a football game to make you proud to wear maroon or wear your A&M gear, you’re missing out on a lot of what you’re supposed to learn during your time at A&M. There is never a bad day to wear maroon, or a day you shouldn’t be proud to be an Aggie.

by Beergut on Nov 28, 2009 4:54 AM CST up reply actions

Circumstance

It took me so long to watch the Aggies play because I live up here in Raiderland and the Aggies just don’t make it on t.v. very often. Furthermore, the t.v. in my house only picks up 1 channel, and the Aggies never played on it. I just happen to be close to someone who had ESPN on thanksgiving so I finally got to watch them. Also, there isn’t a single cotton-pickin’ radio station in the Lubbock area that picks up anything about the Aggies. So in regard to what tooke me so long, I’m just a victim of circumstance.

And by me saying that I was proud to be wearin’ maroon, you think I am implying that there are times when I am not proud to wear maroon. I have no idea where you got that, thin air maybe? That was a wrong assumption on your part and you read way too much into my statement. I’m always proud to wear maroon.

by Aggie4Christ on Nov 28, 2009 7:48 AM CST up reply actions

ah, Lubbock

then your inability to watch us would make sense.

As for the second part, I’ve heard the “today I’m finally proud to wear maroon/be an Aggie” attitude too much lately. Like I said, it wasn’t meant as an attack on you, it is just something that really irks me. If you’re an Aggie, you should be proud to be an Aggie ALL THE TIME, not just when we win football games. Since you live in Lubbock, I’m sure you represent plenty, just out of necessity.

Sometimes, I wonder about some of these younger classes we’re turning out, though.

Woulda, Coulda, Shouda...

The aggys will always be aggys – as long as they continue to lay down in games like OU and kansas State and suck it up in game against the Mighty Horns.

But, this being said – congratulations on your moral victory – and “Cart” McCoy owned you last night!

I take it you haven't been watching college football for very long

or you wouldn’t be saying that.

I don’t see anyone on here trumpeting a moral victory; a loss is a loss.

I don’t think you will find anyone on here claiming our defense is a stellar unit, so I don’t see why you think McCoy’s performance denotes ‘ownage’. It is really no different than what Tyler Hansen did to us, or what Landry Jones did to us. When you have a poor defense, you tend to make everyone facing it look good.

by Beergut on Nov 28, 2009 5:18 AM CST up reply actions

Were you actually watching the game, or just in front of a television? Or perhaps, more importantly, do you even have a grasp on the sport? Not a single other Texas fan has come to this board and made the claim that A&M sucked in this game. If anything, A&M not only played beyond expectations, but also managed to shred one of the nation’s top defenses. Texas managed to do exactly what they were expected to do – beat an awful defense. Congrats to Daniel McCoy and co. on doing their jobs. Mighty indeed.

The comments by beergut and ambivalent make my case

Ownership definition – FORTY NINE, forty nine, FORTY NINE,49,49,49 points – 307 yds. passing 175 rushing!!!!!!!!!! What’s YOUR definition of ownership? Agreed – McCoy hasn’t been the ONLY one to own the aggys this year but McCoy sure owned them Thurs. night!
Moral Victory definition – " If anything, A&M not only played beyond expectations, but also managed to shred one of the nation’s top defenses."

Both of you goobers would lose in a court case.

Condescension and doofus definition – “I take it you haven’t been watching college football very long”
“Were you actually watching the game, or just in front of a television? Or perhaps, more importantly, do you even have a grasp on the sport?”

All this being said – I LOVE your band and your kissing tradition!

actually

49 points isn’t all that impressive, since we’ve given up 65 and 62 points to two other teams texas is supposed to be superior to. You really should be trumpeting 42 points, because I didn’t see McCoy out there throwing a block for Goodwin on his KO return, so I don’t see how he gets credit for that.

The reason I say you obviously haven’t been watching college football long is because of your statement that we “laid down for OU and Kansas State” but “suck it up” or play up in games against texas. If you had been watching college football this year, or even if you had just looked at the Big 12 conference stats occasionally, you’d notice that this game wasn’t an anomaly for us, this wasn’t some big surprise, our offense has been performing like this all season long. The fact that you didn’t know this and just assumed this was us ‘playing up’ in a game against texas makes me question your knowledge of football.

And which university are you majoring in business at? THE University of Florida? THE University of Kansas? THE University of Oklahoma? So many schools claim to be THE University these days…..

So, I suspect that I will now be barred from this little blog in order for you guys to wink at each other, slap yourselves on your backs and congratulate yourself for showing this ignorant little girl, who has never slung on a jock strap, what REAL men know about football.

And, by-the-way, it matters not what others scored on you, how often they have done it or how weak your little team is – my point was that Colt McCoy owned you for this night and there is no denying it – the score speaks for itself.

Furthermore, if you really mean you would rather have your 5 and 5 QB than the winningest QB in the history of the game, then your knowledge of football is rather questionable as well – don’t you think?

I took offense to you referring to one of the other community members here as a ‘goober’; you can call me whatever you want, I get called all sorts of humorous things on BON, but I would prefer to try to conduct yourself with a little class and not resort to name calling while crafting your argument here. Dissenting views are welcomed on this blog; personal attacks are not. Calling someone a name adds nothing to the discourse; we are more intelligent than that, so I require people to act like it.

This was after you took your condesending(sic) attitude against my knowledge of football or this game in particular. You fololwed(sic) this up with ANOTHER attack on my "lack" of football knowledge, i.e: "The fact that you didn’t know this and just assumed this was us ‘playing up’ in a game against texas makes me question your knowledge of football."

You aren’t the only one I’ve questioned as to whether they’ve been watching college football this season; a lot of texas fans have remarked about how incredible Jerrod was, and I’ve asked them where they were the rest of the season? Jerrod has had games like this all season long.

I thought you were capable of handling a little rivalry reparte(sic) – evidently not – not from some little Longhorn broad by God!

littlelonghornbroadbygod would make an excellent login for you; have you thought about changing it from ‘littlelonghorngirl’? Just a thought……

So, I suspect that I will now be barred from this little blog in order for you guys to wink at each other, slap yourselves on your backs and congratulate yourself for showing this ignorant little girl, who has never slung on a jock strap, what REAL men know about football.

Sorry, but I’m a little too old to go in for simple sexism. You will only be banned if you ignore the warning, and personally attack other members of the community, which is something I would ban male members for, too. Gender has nothing to do with it.

Furthermore, if you really mean you would rather have your 5 and 5 QB than the winningest QB in the history of the game, then your knowledge of football is rather questionable as well – don’t you think?

Do you mean 6-6 quarterback, i.e. a reference to the team record? Jerrod still has better numbers than Colt does this season, so no, I would still take Jerrod. Since I watched how poorly Colt did with a porous offensive line in 2006 (22 TDs, 18 INTs), I would still rather take Jerrod (22-10 in ‘08, 28-6 in ’09) because of the issues we’ve had on offensive line the last two years. Colt would not have been as successful as Jerrod was with the same personnel.

by Beergut on Nov 30, 2009 5:31 AM CST reply actions

I am really at a loss as to how to answer you

Particularly since you have cut my legs out from under me by admitting how poor the quality of your team is and has been – and trying to find a moral victory with your little QB playing under those circumstances. All your admissions as to how you would be just as condescending towards men as you were to me does not excuse your pious attitude nor your lofty impression of your own intellectual prowess in all matters football.

Furthermore, your hypocrisy is astounding – particularly when you ask a longhorn fan on BON whether or not he is illiterit. This constitutes name calling in my book and refutes the folowing statement made by you:
" Dissenting views are welcomed on this blog; personal attacks are not. Calling someone a name adds nothing to the discourse"

And, finally, getting back to the game of football – what is it about you aggys that makes you persist in living in a state of denial? Colt McCoy has just accomplished what no QB in the HISTORY of college football has done – by winning FORTY THREE (43- I’ll try not to make a typo (sic) for you). Your QB had a great game, no doubt, but if you insist upon inane arguments you do nothing but expose your unsupported bias and lack of objectivity. I think I can guess who Sherman would surely take – he would jump for joy for a QB that could improve on 5 -5 (oops, 6-6, like it makes a difference) – and extend his tenure for a year longer than he probably has.

Finally, just so you know – I have a bf that is a major college QB, my dad played in the NFL for 14 years and both of my brothers played through high school and for winning programs. Furthermore, I have been on the sidelines of every game the longhorns have played for the last two years. Now, I admit, I personally have never played but I will wager that I have been exposed to a LOT more football than you ever have and I’m including from high school to the NFL. And, finally, from mine and my genders viewpoint, we have never really considered sexism to be “simple”.

re:

I don’t believe in moral victories and have said so repeatedly. This isn’t about a hollow ‘moral victory’, it is just me supporting my statement that Jerrod outplayed Colt last Thursday night.

All your admissions as to how you would be just as condescending towards men as you were to me does not excuse your pious attitude nor your lofty impression of your own intellectual prowess in all matters football.

Go back and read what I replied again. I said I will hold you to the exact same standards I hold male members here to with regard to the rules and reasons for being banned; it has nothing to do with being condescending.

Furthermore, your hypocrisy is astounding – particularly when you ask a longhorn fan on BON whether or not he is illiterit(sic). This constitutes name calling in my book and refutes the folowing statement made by you:
" Dissenting views are welcomed on this blog; personal attacks are not. Calling someone a name adds nothing to the discourse"

Please go google the difference between a declarative sentence and an interrogative sentence. There is a big difference between making a statement and asking a question. The fact that you were admitted to texas and have made it through three years there without this knowledge is frightening. BTW, the word is ‘illiterate’.

And, finally, getting back to the game of football – what is it about you aggys(sic) that makes you persist in living in a state of denial? Colt McCoy has just accomplished what no QB in the HISTORY of college football has done – by winning FORTY THREE (43- I’ll try not to make a typo (sic) for you). Your QB had a great game, no doubt, but if you insist upon inane arguments you do nothing but expose your unsupported bias and lack of objectivity. I think I can guess who Sherman would surely take – he would jump for joy for a QB that could improve on 5 -5 (oops, 6-6, like it makes a difference) – and extend his tenure for a year longer than he probably has.

I fail to see what setting a career record (43 wins) has to do with McCoy’s performance last Thursday night. If you want to argue that McCoy is the overall better QB because he set the NCAA record for wins by a starting QB, that is a different argument than the discussion we are having here, which is who had a better game last Thursday.

As for who Sherman would take, you are supporting your argument with supposition. As I have already said, based on McCoy’s own performance in 2006, we can see what he does with a poor offensive line, and we have seen what Jerrod has done with a poor offensive line. Clearly, Jerrod outperformed McCoy, and if we’re going to use supposition to support an argument, I can make the same argument that Sherman would prefer Jerrod over Colt.

So, what you are saying is you know people who have played or are currently playing football at different levels of the game, and as a result, you’ve watched a lot of football, including being a spectator on the sidelines of longhorn games. Being exposed to a lot of football games doesn’t mean you know anything about the game, and you would lose that wager.

And, finally, from mine and my genders viewpoint, we have never really considered sexism to be "simple".

You are the one who played the gender card and attempted to imply you were being picked on because you are a female. That is claiming sexism, and claiming it in that manner is as simple as it gets.

Are you blinded by bias?

I agree with Muschamp – statistics are for losers but since you insist that johnson had a better night than McCoy, lets examine them anyway:

Rushing Winner
McCoy 18 – 175 yds. 9.72 yd avg.- 1 TD McCoy
Johnson – 14 – 97 yds. 6.93 yd avg.- 0 TD

Passing
McCoy 24-40 304 yds. 4 TD’s
Johnson 26-33 342 yds. 4 TD’s Johnson
(I’m giving this to you even though Johson had no more TD’s than McCoy but I knew you needed SOME kind of moral win here)

Total Yds. gained
McCoy – 479 McCoy
Johnson – 439

Winning QB
McCoy 1 McCoy

Final Score
McCoy – 3
Johnson – 1

BEST QB – McCoy

Statistics don’t lie do they?

Further information

“Even Texas A&M free safety Jordan Pugh was impressed by McCoy. "I think I played the Heisman Trophy winner, he led the team," Pugh said. "After the game, I told him to get a championship, a Big 12 and national championship."

If you think Sherman, like you, would pick Johnson over a two time nominee for the Heisman trophy and the winningest QB in the history of college football than he will aways be destined to be a 6-6 coach and the aggys (Austin spelling) will remain the laughing stock of the big 12.

It is no crime to love the school you attended, I myself have many wonderful friends that attend A&M, and I am sure you bleed maroon. However, your bias and arrogance has stunted your objectivity to the point that you just come off as clueless.
