  • Men's basketball's victory over Citadel on Friday gave the Aggies their final win for 2009 at Reed Arena. The men will be playing the Huskies of Washington tomorrow in Seattle at 10:06 PM Texas time. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. The Huskies are a solid team, currently ranked #21 with a 7-3 record on the season. The Huskies have lost to Georgetown, and had a loss to Texas Tech in overtime in Lubbock. This should be a solid test for our team, and a chance for us to improve our RPI for seeding come March should we win the game. Mostly, I just want to see vast improvement from our poor effort against New Mexico.

Star-divide

  • The Independence Bowl is one week from today; the line has moved from Georgia being a mere 4 point favorite to a solid TD favorite. Hopefully we're preparing diligently for the upset.
  • texas reinstated WR/KR D.J. Monroe after he pled down to a lesser charge of obstructing a passageway, and the driving while intoxicated charges were dropped. Hell, we all know that is an equal charge; obstructing a passageway puts lives in danger just as badly as an underage kid driving around while so drunk he is impaired. The best part is Mack Brown's statement to the media:

"I had a long talk with D.J. yesterday," Brown said. "We looked at the punishment he had, what will affect them in 15 years and what it does to the attitude of the team. And we felt that a three-game suspension for the charges that were dropped, that he should be reinstated."

Brown might as well have said, "We looked at how badly we might need him for the BCS Championship Game, and decided to reinstate him." I'd respect Brown more if he stood by his earlier punishment.
  • I watched texas' win over North Carolina at Jerry World on television yesterday. While it looks like texas has a very good team this year, I couldn't help wondering how good of a view that stadium gives for basketball. The court seemed fairly far away from a lot of the fans in the stands. Add in the fact that the action is shown on the massive jumbotron, and you have fans paying $100 for tickets and $30 to park merely to 'be there' to watch a game on a screen they could watch at home for free. It will be interesting to see what, if any, changes they make for hosting the Final Four. Cutting the stadium in half to make it a more intimate setting might be an option they should consider.
  • If you've never watched the Texas Aggie Band Show, you're missing a good time. Initially, the thought of doing a show about the FTAB seems kind of silly, but they keep it interesting and entertaining. It is worth a view.

texas Not Quite Trendy Yet

I'm quite sure

that a 3 game suspension is the norm for DWI’s at Texas. And it wasn’t even a DWI. I don’t think we “badly needed” Monroe back for the title game. You of all people should know that Marquise Goodwin is sufficient enough.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

false, the law isn’t perfect and just because you are arrested for a crime does not mean you have committed it, and just because you plead down to a meaningless charge doesn’t mean the prosecution ever had a leg to stand on on the first allegation.

but i’ll let the actual lawyers explain to you how pleading down works.

by Displaced Longhorn on Dec 22, 2009 10:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Probably because he forced into that decision...

if it went to trial its a long drown out case that could take months. If he pleads to a lesser charge he might just be able to rejoin the team before the MNC. His story was very different then the officer’s story. And cops are always truthful, especially when they pull over a high profile suspects (sarcasm).

Nobody forces anyone to plead.

But I could see just wanting to move it along and not have it drawn out, that makes sense.

It appears we may have the same disdain for police.

Brown said that DJ could not rejoin the team until the judical system had...

a chance to run its course. Either he plead the case out to a lesser charge and play in the MNC or fight it and not be able to play in the MNC due to the case still pending past January. There really is not much of a choice.

Also, fighting a DWI is costly process and dragging the case would have increased the court costs exponentially.

My bet is he refused to blow or give blood

by miketag on Dec 22, 2009 7:20 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

there weren’t any reports of him refusing to blow, nor any mention of the 180 day license suspension for refusing. for some odd reason it seems he was never asked, the cop took him into custody with extremely weak evidence and was just hoping something would stick I guess.

by Displaced Longhorn on Dec 23, 2009 1:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No they cannot

They can hold refusal as “evidence” but they cannot force someone to blow unless a judge is present.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

Which has been happening quite often in Austin...

usually during the holidays such as these. I guarantee to you APD has hired a phlebotomist to draw blood at the station if you refuse a breathalyzer. Be careful out there folks if you have to drink call a taxi.

3 game suspension is the norm.

At least Mack Brown had the sense to keep him out for three games, while Urban Meyer allowed Carlos Dunlap come back after one after what was an egregious DWI.

How was Dunlap’s DWI any worse than Monroe’s?

by miketag on Dec 23, 2009 10:21 AM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Uh falling asleep at the wheel of your car as cops watch on...

the cops had to wake Dunlap up after which he was unresponsive. He was slumped over the wheel with the car running.

Monroe was awake and coherent. I also believe that something stinks about Monroe’s arrest.

dunlap was reported to be recklessly driving by a witness who called it in and the police showed up. he was passed out at a stop light that cycled through several times while the officer watched, he would pass in and out of consciousness (ahem, sleep) when the officers tapped on the window. his eyes were blood shot. he smelled of alcohol. he had poor balance during the sobriety tests. he refused to blow. his case is still pending as far as i know.

monroe puked while an officer pulled him over for erratic driving on i-35. he plead down to a meaningless charge.

can you see why dunlap’s case might be a bit worse?

Quit Whining

At some point you and your coach are going to realize that the aggies are not that good and the Lobos are not that bad. GET OVER IT. If you had played NC or Duke in Houston you would have gotten your A$$$ES kicked. We just handled you and then got bored at the end….. We’ll see what kind of team you are at UDUB.

by LoboLouie on Dec 21, 2009 7:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

it isn't whining to say we played poorly and we didn't give a good effort

I’ve watched this team play all year, and we didn’t play our best basketball against y’all.

That isn’t whining and that isn’t taking credit away from what y’all did in that game, it is just a statement of fact.

by Beergut on Dec 22, 2009 1:36 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If we had played unc or Duke maybe we would have taken the seriously and given a better effort.

A&M shouldn’t be taking anyone lightly or getting over confident.

by Displaced Longhorn on Dec 22, 2009 10:20 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree, but do u think the average college basketball player gets more hyped up for Duke and UNC or New Mexico?

by miketag on Dec 22, 2009 7:19 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

not talking about hyping up, but you said A&M didn’t take them seriously and gave a poor effort because of that. obviously you’re going to be more worried about a game with duke/unc as opposed to new mexico, but unless you have the talent/history to zombie walk through your opponent (like Texas did at the beginning of this season in football), you should probably wake up, take the team seriously, and realize that you’re not good enough to just show up and leave with the W.

by Displaced Longhorn on Dec 23, 2009 1:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

uh

where did I say we didn’t take them seriously?

I said we gave a poor effort.

do you have two accounts on here to make it look like this blog has more active A&M posters? cause I was clearly talking to miketag when i both replied to him and paraphrased him….

If we had played unc or Duke maybe we would have taken the seriously and given a better effort.

you said A&M didn’t take them seriously and gave a poor effort because of that.

i mean really, that’s bad. you should be embarrassed.

The Texas Aggie Band Show is worth checking out if you want to see the complete Halftime Drills without purchasing the DVD.
