Georgia Bulldogs Versus The Fightin' Texas Aggies In The Independence Bowl?

Latest rumors I am hearing have us going to Shreveport for the Independence Bowl to face the Georgia Bulldogs, who finished second in the SEC East with a 4-4 conference record and a 7-5 record overall. Georgia head coach Mark Richt recently did a housecleaning of his defensive coaching staff, firing defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, defensive ends coach Jon Fabris, and linebackers coach John Jancek. The firings happened because of dissatisfaction with a defense that has given up 26.4 points per game this season, a number that seems low when compared to the 32.7 points per game A&M's defense has given up this season. All coaches have been asked to stay on and coach the bowl game, although it is not clear yet whether they will do so. If Georgia has to bring in new coaches for the bowl game, or has to formulate their defensive game plan with temporarily promoted assistants, this may well work out to be a positive for the Aggie offense.

Unfortunately, there will be no changes to Georgia's offensive coaching staff, and this is the area that worries me the most. Georgia is coming off of a stellar performance against rival Georgia Tech, with their offense piling up 339 yards rushing, and a whopping 7.7 yards per carry average. While Georgia only averages 157 yards per game rushing, a performance like the Georgia Tech game is disconcerting to me, considering the fact that we normally give up an average of 169 yards per game rushing at 4.5 yards per carry. Right now, run defense is a big weakness for us, and Georgia has the offensive personnel to move the ball on the ground, and play keep away from our offense.

I am hopeful the ESPN Bowl Projections are accurate for Georgia, and they are headed to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl to play Virginina Tech instead of going to Shreveport. While my desire for A&M to play Navy in the Texas Bowl is well known, I wouldn't mind the Aggies traveling to Arizona to play a Big Televen team like Minnesota in the Insight Bowl. While Tempe, AZ isn't anywhere near as close to College Station as Shreveport, LA or Houston, TX, it would be a good trip for the players, and it is a game I think we could win.

Right now, I think we're left seeing how the Big 12 Championship Game ends up before all the bowl invitations can be extended, and we'll know officially where we are going.

i dont understand

why would you rather play a boring navy team that runs the option all day long? i think playing georiga would be a good game as well it is a sec school that will draw alot of attention from fans other than here in texas.

just common football fans really will have no desire to watch A&M v. Navy as well it is on the NFL network which nobody gets anyways.

i am not worried about losses i want to play the best team possible.

There's something spiritual about baseball — like Mother Nature," Garrido said. "You don't mess with it. And I think before a player can really believe in it, he has to experience it."

Bowl Game

I think many Aggie fans on this blog are of the opinion that A&M needs a win over any opponent rather than a loss to a quality opponent. Obviously, Navy could beat A&M, and A&M could beat Georgia, Va Tech, etc. But in terms of likelihood, the Ags have a better chance against Navy than they do against a team like Georgia or VT. Personally, I would rather A&M play in a game they have the best chance of winning and finish the season at 7-6. Right now, the bowl game against Navy offers the best chance of an overall winning record.

Just getting to a bowl game this year is a nice turn around from 2008. I will not complain or worry about which bowl A&M winds up in.

I choose quality opponent over Navy.

I think a stupid blowout option makes us no better or forward-looking. It’s like with Boston College when they had that string of bowl wins (they played a ton of nobodies).

I think Navy might actually be better than Georgia, although not as big a name recently.

I expect an A&M UGA game to be a very high scoring affair. UGA has no defense at all.

it is more important that we finish the season 7-6 and with a winning record

we need to end the bowl losing streak

The last thing we need to do is go toa bowl, play a tough opponent, play tough, and lose a close one. We’ve done that too many times already.

Nobody?

You might want to check the roster of teams BC beat during that streak. It includes the Georgia Bulldogs (2001 season Music City Bowl, Mark Richt’s first year at UGA).
