Ags Headed To Independence Bowl
Texas A&M has accepted an invitation to play the Georgia Bulldogs on December 28th in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, LA. This was probably the toughest possible matchup that A&M could get, but I think in the long run it will be good for the program. If A&M is to return to the level of success that we all expect, we need to learn how to play with and beat the most talented teams in the nation. Playing a very talented UGA team will help get us to that level. Our freshmen need to see what kind of effort is needed to compete with and beat the Oklahomas and tu's of the world; beating Navy would do nothing to help in that area. Some may argue that a bowl win can do wonders for momentum in recruiting, but I would argue that developing the current players on our roster takes precedence. If we want to be a championship team, our defense needs to improve by leaps and bounds. Practicing for a month against the triple-option, as we would be if we were to play Navy, is not going to help develop our defense for next year.
As I previously stated, we have already won because we have an extra month of practice for our young team to get better. I expect some of our redshirting freshmen to make great gains during these December practices. Preparing for an offense with the athletes that UGA has will help our defense next season against Arkansas and the rest of the Big 12. Playing a defense with the size and speed that UGA has will help our offense perform at a higher level.
On a related note, three members of the UGA coaching staff have decided not to coach in the bowl game. This is suprising to me on many levels. I assumed the defensive coaches would use this game as an audition for future coaching positions. I was somewhat concerned because desperate coaches would likely use an aggressive gameplan in order to catch possible suitors attention. I have no idea how UGA will handle coaching the defense for the bowl game.
On offense, UGA definitely has the athletes to compete with any team in the country. They have a big RB in Caleb King who was nationally ranked coming out of HS. While he has failed to live up to his prep billing, he has had a solid season with 534 yds rushing and 5 TDs on 5.4 yds per carry. He is the type of big back that A&M has struggled to stop the past few seasons. Those of you who were there when we played Tennessee in the 2005 Cotton Bowl may have flashbacks to Gerald Riggs. Washaun Ealey leads UGA in rushing with 639 yds and 3 TDs (5.7 per tote) but has battled injuries. UGA's best offensive weapon and our defensive nightmare is WR A.J. Green. While Julio Jones was the number one rated player in the country in the '08 class, Green has been just as good or better since they both arrived in the SEC. Green had 47 receptions for 751 yds and 6 TDs. The triggerman for the UGA offense is journeyman QB Joe Cox. Cox completed 56 percent of his passes for 2426 yds and 22 TDs with 14 picks. Cox is a mediocre college QB. Unfortunately our defense can make even mediocre college QBs look like world beaters. If we can put consistent pressure on Cox, we can control their passing game and force some turnovers. We will need to win the turnover battle if we want to win this game.
The UGA defense allows 328 yds per game. They give up 200.6 passing and 127.8 rushing. Obviously they have not met expectations since half the defensive staff was fired. Statistically the player that stands out the most is sophomore DE Justin Houston who has had 15 TFLs on the year with 7.5 sacks. We need to contain him if we want to win the game. It should be interesting to see how our OL matches up with the athletes that UGA lines up after having faced Arkansas, OU, and tu this year. Our OL has improved as the season wore on. This game will be a great test and a great opportunity for A&M; hopefully we will be up to the task.

question:
As I previously stated, we have already won because we have an extra month of practice for our young team to get better.
Doesn’t that work two ways?
Nice initial breakdown of our two teams. I dont think we have any idea how the lack of three coaches will effect things either. My hope is that as CMR will have to step up across the board, that will have and immediate and direct positive impact. he knows our defensive schemes and likely won’t change them dramtically, I just hope he can impact their execution.
Major strength you missed was our O line, that could be the difference maker. Major weakness you missed was the special teams – which is why we fired our ST coordinator. Again, Coach Richt will be very busy getting the ST on tap.
Joe Cox is horrible when pressured, but with a small lead, he can find a rythm and do well. Our D has been wide open in the 5-10 yard range all year and I continue to believe teams have failed to take full advantage of that.
I look forward to the game an plan to attend. I know the Aggies have a classy and dedicated fan base. GO DAWGS!

Well, subtract three coaches dedicated to defense and add in two grad assistants with a season OC...
… maybe this will jump start the career of one of the GAs stepping up in responsibility on defense?
Honestly, given what A&M was able to accomplish versus Texas, I would think Aggies would be drooling at the prospect of getting a shot at Georgia (since the attitude here seems to be that Georgia is a better name to play than Navy – who I agree with other posters is probably a better team at the moment than UGA). This seems like a huge opportunity for the Ags to get some badly needed momentum into 2010.
Georgia should (should, I say) approach this game like it did its last (and really how it should have approached the whole damn year offensively): leaning heavily on the OL to dish out a steady diet of Caleb King and Washaun Ealey sprinkled with play-action passes. Hopefully for Dawg fans AJ Green will be back in action – although I wouldn’t be opposed if we sat him for this game.

I’m a little confused. Does what work both ways. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know a lot about your team. I know that King has underachieved considering the fanfare he came in there with. I saw Cox play in the spring game and against OSU and was unimpressed. Like I said, with our defense it may not matter. You guys killed an Arkansas team that killed us. I expect you to be favored by 7-10.

mike, i put your block quote up there
you said you had “already won because you have an extra month to prepare”. Doesnt UGA also have an extra month to prepare? I found it confusing you were pointing at the fence, but then finding reasons your team could lose at the same time. Maybe I misunderstood myself.

I think
mike meant that by going to a bowl at all, we gain a month of practice for next year, regardless of the bowl outcome.
we have already won because we have an extra month of practice for our young team to get better
not, “an extra month to prepare” as you stated.
We have a young team, and the goal is now for them to mature for next year.
My goal for the season was to make a bowl game so we could get an extra week of practice. We have such a young team that it was a must for our program. That is why I said we already won, b/c the program won. I was not talking about the actual game. This extra month of practice and just playing a team of your caliber will help the program greatly.

ah, got it thank you
you are already a million times better on your blog than any Auburn or GT blog. which is why i say to you and the 12th man “Stay Classy”

Nice preview.
I’m really looking forward to this game. Neither team has been playing to the level that their fans think they should this season, but both have showed promise. I think that means that both teams are pretty evenly matched. I also think the fact that each of us is getting an opponent with a better name and a lot of history (as opposed to, say, Iowa State for us or Kentucky for you) will help motivate each team to actually come out and give their best effort on the field.
Also, it doesn’t hurt that one of my best friends is an Aggie… this will make for weeks of great ribbing for one of us.
I like your preview, miketag… good luck on the 28th.
Also overlooked,
Blair Walsh, our Kicker. While he did miss one against Georgia Tech from the 55 yrd line, he is spectacularly consistent. His longest made field goal is 52 yards and longest attempt, but missed is 56 yrds. In 2008 he was 100% accurate in extra points and he’s nearly that in field goal attempts. (We all saw how important those PAT’s can be during the BECG.)
If we can get to the 40-45 yard line, there’s a 95% chance (in my estimation) we will score points. He’s simply amazingly accurate and he can kick the heck out of the football. Given the opportunity, he will regularly put the ball in the endzone on a kickoff.
Rather than drag this out with the litany of accomplishments, here’s the link to his stats at georgiadogs.com.
