What Is The Advocare V100?

A New Name For A Thirty-Three Year Old Bowl

After finding out which bowl we agreed to go to, I set out to find out just exactly who it is who is sponsoring this bowl game. Advocare is a health and wellness company located in Dallas, and Advocare V100 is their multivitamin product that they market to college athletes. This is the Independence Bowl's fifth title sponsor (who can forget Poulan Weedeaters sponsoring a bowl with artificial turf?), but the first direct sales company to ever be allowed to sponsor a bowl game. In a sense, this bowl game is making corporate sponsor history. So, in a sense, by participating in this game, we are helping make bowl history. I am just hopeful if will be the beginning of a positive bowl history for the Aggies.

Stewart Mandel / CNNSI

Has anyone else read this article from the CNNSI cfb writer Stewart Mandel? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/stewart_mandel/12/08/bowl.rankings/index.html

Although I have nothing really against where he ranked the Independence Bowl (22nd out of 34 bowls – I personally think it will be better than that) or what he said about the match up, this guy is clearly out of his mind or trolling. This is my favorite excerpt:

6) Capital One (Jan. 1): Penn State (10-2) vs. LSU (9-3). If the Tigers win, it’s yet another example of the SEC’s superiority over the Big Ten. If the Nittany Lions win, it’s because LSU was without injured RB Charles Scott.

So by inference, PSU is incapable of beating LSU when Charles Scott is healthy. That means 10 times out of 10, LSU will win this game so long as they have a healthy running back.

In a separate article, he all but handed Bama the MNC over Texas. Seemingly according to his article, the two teams might as well not even play. If his goal was to piss off the kids at BON, mission accomplished sir.

I believe Mandel has ties to Bama

His father is a Bama alum or somesuch.

Mandel’s purpose is to generate hits to his column, although I think the people at BON WANT the media to doubt them, they think that is part of the reason they won in ’05.

Yes, it’s a pretty common “coachism” to want to be the underdog and wish to receive a lack of respect in the hopes that it motivates players. I am not sure why any player would need motivation when playing for the MNC.

I understand that Mandel wants hype for his article, but he comes off as either crazy or intentionally inflammatory. There are certainly more subtle ways of suggesting that Bama is the favorite. His method is more like sticking something into an ant mound.

He has always been a big Bama homer. I would rank the Independence in the bottom 5 but don’t really care. Will get to gamble and watch my Ags play within a 3 hour drive of home.

The bowl matchup in the bottom 5, or the actual stadium in the bottom 5?

Stadium! Matchup is actually a pretty good one.
