Any feedback on RB Mike Goodson?

Jaxon here with SBN's Panthers site. As you know we drafted your former RB Mike Goodson and so I was hoping to get some feedback from the Aggie community on this guy. You can read a profile we did on him here.

We have obviosuly been impressed with some the film on him returning kicks and running the brick. Very nice open field moves and good speed. There are some obvious questions too:

  • Why was his playing time reduced his Senior year?
  • What was his issues with the coaching staff about?
  • Is he coachable?
  • Do you think he can make it in the NFL as RB or kick returner?
  • Does he have any issues with fumbling the ball?
  • Any other thoughts or opinions would be nice.

Any insight would be appreciated by my readers.!

1. Injuries and attitude. He was slowed by injuries, and then when it became clear he wasn’t going to accomplish his goals for his junior season, he pretty much packed it in.

2. I think he clashed with the coaching staff over lack of playing time. We had an incredibly poor offensive line last season, which hurt our ability to run the ball, and I think his lack of success frustrated him. He was to be the feature back in 2008, and it didn’t work out that way.

3. Yes, he is coachable.

4. He definitely has the skills to make it as a RB; I think if he works with a good special teams coach, he can be an excellent kick returner.

5. No, he is not a fumbler.

Simply put, I think Carolina got a steal with this pick. I really wish Goodson’s junior year would have gone better, but I look forward to watching him in the League. Goodson’s only real struggle was running off-tackle; he is an incredible talent running outside, but sometimes struggled power-running. The caveat there is that under Dennis Franchione, we were a scheme built for true power-running, and Fran would sometimes try to cross up the defense by switching the read between Goodson and Jorvorskie Lane. After being pounded by Lane, taking on Goodson between the tackles was a relief. Goodson also sometimes overran his blocking; he was too fast to the point of attack off-tackle. Last season, it was more a function of the fact that the OL was just so poor, he could never get started before the defense was upon him.
