Billy Gillispie To USC?

The news just came out that Tim Floyd has resigned as head basketball coach at USC. USC is under a cloud right now because of  joint NCAA investigation of both their men's basketball program and their football program. Floyd allegedly gave $1000 to a handler of former USC basketball star O.J. Mayo.

Selfishly, I look at this resignation as a good thing, because this is one less program that will be ranked ahead of the Aggies in the top 25 next season. People can talk about Floyd being upset that the basketball program is being offered up as a sacrificial lamb to the NCAA to take the pressure off the football program, but that is irrelevant. I am personally of the opinion that Mayo wasn't anywhere close to what he was thought to be in college, and I think Floyd wasted his money. Mayo's presence at USC may have helped Floyd with other recruits, but I don't think it helped the program that much on the court, so he failed to get his money's worth. Floyd's resignation and the ensuing turmoil could severely weaken USC, depending on if they decide to go the interim route, and promote an assistant to head coach right now, or if they decide to bring in a new coach.

Star-divide

If they decide to bring in a whole new staff and start with a clean slate, let me be the first to suggest Billy Clyde Gillispie for the job. Yes, BCG didn't do too well at Kentucky, but we Aggies know Billy Clyde can coach, and I'd be happy to watch him work his magic in the Pac-10. With Lute Olsen gone from Arizona, the Pac-10 only has Ben Howland to keep it interesting on the coaching side of things, and hiring BCG would ensure that UCLA doesn't take over the conference.

Besides, with Billy Clyde coaching basketball and Pete Carroll coaching football, USC could be the next school to pull the Florida double, a national championship in football and basketball in the same year. I still believe Billy Clyde is going to win a national championship in basketball, and USC is as good a place as any for him to get it done.

Billy Clyde

I know that I am in the minority when it comes to UK fans and the subject of Billy Gillispie, but I remain in the pro-BCG camp. I, too, believe that Billy will win a national title some day and I, for one, will be SO happy for him when he does. I think Billy is a very good coach and given the opportunity to implement his system with his players he will showcase that for the world to see. I wish him nothing but success in the future and really think that USC should take a good look at him. There is definite potential there.

Great post by the way! It is SO refreshing to see something positive written about ol’ Billy! :)

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Second Tink's comments (kentuckygirl0724) - we know her as Tink over as ASOB.

We're BIG fans of BCG here

I firmly believe that had he stayed at A&M, in another 10-15 years, he would have retired here with a few national titles to his credit, and a statue dedicated to him outside Reed Arena.

I know he didn’t get they players to buy-in as much at UK, and I know he didn’t do all of the little things to keep the alumni happy, but here we’re just happy if our basketball coach keeps winning games. We don’t need him to be the face of the State to the rest of the nation, which I think is an unwritten requirement for the basketball coach at UK.

Support Billy G

Billy G was done dirty by UK. He was not even given a fair chance to bring in his own recruits or anything. I hope he wins the lawsuit. Any program would benefit and succeed under his leadership. I will miss those pretty blue eyes, smile, and dimples here in KY. I hate it that he was let go. He will prosper and succeed while UK will not. Mercy, any lady that gets with him is so lucky. Wish it was me. Best wishes to Billy G.
I heard he was back in Texas is that accurate?
