Win A National Title, Lose An Assistant Coach
I once read where an opposing coach said the best way to stop the Florida State Seminoles football dynasty, which ran from the 1990s to earlier this decade, was to hire off their assistant coaches. The implication was that part of the reason the Seminoles were so successful was because of their offensive and defensive coordinators and other position coaches. When Georgia hired Mark Richt and N.C. State hired Chuck Amato, that theory looked to have some credence. Georgia and N.C. State went on to some successful football seasons, while FSU took a step down.Assistant coaches from winning programs are also hired because of the simple fact that success breeds success, and when one program is successful, other programs are going to want to hire the people that made the original program a success, in hopes of duplicating that success where they are.
This appears to be what is happening with the men's golf coaching staff at Texas A&M now.
Aggie men's assistant golf coach Jonathan Dismuke has been hired as the new head men's golf coach at Houston. Houston has a strong program with a storied history, which Dismuke will try to improve upon.
Houston's golf program ranks among the best in NCAA history, winning 16 NCAA team national championships and eight NCAA individual national crowns. The program also has produced 19 team conference champions and 20 individual conference champs and 44 All-America honorees while former Cougars on the PGA Tour have won more than $73 million during their careers.
"Much of what attracted me to the University of Houston is the past success of the golf program," Dismuke said. "It's one of the most decorated programs in collegiate golf history, and I am excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this special program."
Dismuke was at A&M for only one year, previously serving as an assistant at Ole Miss from 2006-08. While this isn't exactly Mark Richt leaving Florida State for Georgia, Dismuke made up one-half of our golf coaching staff, and was an excellent recruiter. The challenge for head coach J.T. Higgins is to replace Dismuke, and keep the momentum of the program going.
I am sure Coach Higgins will find a capable replacement, and we here at I Am The 12th Man.com wish Coach Dismuke all the best of luck in leading the Cougars.
