Your Picks For Aggie All-Conference Players This Season
I was recently asked to provide a list of players on the A&M team who have a realistic chance to make an all-conference team after the season is over. I sent out a list of twelve players total, with one player mentioned twice because of his ability as a specialist. I tried to project what I expect these players to do this season, and combine it with their production from last season to come up with a realistic list. My list follows after the jump:
- Jerrod Johnson, QB
- Jeff Fuller, WR
- Ryan Tannehill, WR
- Cyrus Gray, RB
- Christine Michael, RB
- Jamie McCoy, TE
- Von Miller, OLB
- Matt Featherston, DE
- Eddie Brown, DT
- Trent Hunter, FS
- Jordan Pugh, SS
- Cyrus Gray, KR
I think some of the players I listed are no-brainers, like Johnson, Fuller, and Tannehill. The problem in the Big 12 is we have too many good quarterbacks. Jerrod Johnson passed for 21 TDs last season in his first year as a starter, yet he received very little all-conference attention because we have Sam Bradford, Zac Robinson, Todd Reesing, and other good QBs in this conference. Johnson may very well have a 3000+ yd passing season, throw for 25+ TDs, and still not make any all-conference teams. I listed Christine Michael because I think he will receive some offensive freshman of the year consideration, if he manages to beat Cyrus Gray out for the starter spot. Gray, of course, is listed at KR because he performed so well there last season, averaging 23.9 yds a return with one taken back for a score. Jamie McCoy had a stellar season at Te last season, and I expect him to add to that this year. Jermaine Gresham from Oklahoma will be first team all-conference at TE this year, so McCoy is really looking at second-team consideration.
Trent Hunter should be first team all-conference at safety, and I defy anyone who watches him play to tell me differently. Von Miller is listed as an OLB because I consider the LB/DE "Jack" position they are using him in this season to simply be a de facto 3-4 OLB under another name. I think moving Matt Featherston to DE will help our defense tremendously, giving us some speed to the outside, and with Miller on the opposite side, I expect Featherston to make some real noise this season. I think he'll put up some numbers to get some post-season consideration, which is why I added him to the list.
I considered some others for possible inclusion, players I think will play a bigger role this season and receive post-season consideration, like Ricky Cavanaugh at LB and Joe Villavisencio, but I don't know them well enough to include them on this list.
Who are your picks on this A&M team to receive all-conference consideration?

“other good QBs in the conference”…yeah some guy named Colt McCoy…
Reesing Stats
Not a Heisman Finalist
QB Rating: 148.53
Passing Yards: 3,888
Touchdowns: 32
INT: 13
Comp %: 66.5
McCoy Stats
Heisman Finalist
Rating: 173.75
Passing Yards: 3,859
Touchdowns: 34
INT: 8
Comp %: 76.7
I am not trying to take anything away from Reesing, I love his game, but you can’t avoid putting McCoy on this list.
I like your list of Aggies and reasons for or against their inclusion. I especially like your call of Cyrus as a KR, great point.

If you wanna do a story on the great QBs in the Big 12 and talk about McCoy then you are welcome to. Otherwise please refrain from criticizing the content of stories in public. He wrote the piece, he can put whoever the he’ll he pleases in it.

is that a reference to me, DL?
I don’t think I questioned GoBR’s content, just the contention that Nelson has trouble getting off blocks, which actually came from an ESPN piece

the first reply (if i remember correctly) was miketag questioning why apo was not on the list of players with a Texas offer that committed elsewhere (ahmad dixon would also be on this list).
basically, he did exactly what jarrett here did (although not to the same detail). he pointed out that some information was left out of the article (intentional or otherwise) that makes the school look better.
i really have no problem with any articles that can be openly critiqued with some restraint, a kind of “checks and balances” for journalistic integrity. and hey, look what we have here, commenting. that’s their purpose, to discuss the content of the article at hand.

Leaving out McCoy
I believe this more of a reference to the fact that when at all possible, aggys like to avoid giving Texas any credit. Which is why beergut left out McCoy when talking about the conference’s best quarterbacks last year.
Do you believe it to be a coincidence? That when writing the article, beergut was thinking…Okay best quarterbacks in the Big 12 last year….Heisman winner Bradford…who else….oh yes Zac Robinson from OK State….aaaaaannnnd Reesing…..that should be substantial
The dude didnt even really criticize the article, just wondering why McCoy was left out.

actually
it has more to do with the fact that everyone knows about McCoy, so is there really a need to mention him? That was just one sentence where I pointed out that I think JJ was overlooked last year b/c we have a lot of good QBs in this conference.
I also did not mention Graham Harrell, mainly b/c Harrell has used up his eligibility, so he won’t be someone to watch this year. It isn’t some grand conspiracy to make sure texas players don’t receive recognition, because there are some players on texas’ team who I enjoy watching.

Doesn't everyone know about Bradford as well?
You expect people to believe that you accidentally left out the “texas” QB? Really? You know more about football than any other 4 year old I’ve met.

Bradford won the Heisman
so yeah, when you mention QBs in this conference, you kind of need to mention him

You're right, Beergut.
Great point!

He criticized the writer by inferring he had avoided McCoy. I jut have a problem with people comdescending to the owners of their blog on said blog. James pointed out a flaw in what gobr said which is what a blog is for.
by miketag on Jul 20, 2009 6:01 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
If he had gone onto BON and criticized Peter for not having enough Aggie stuff on the blog then the two would be comparable.
by miketag on Jul 20, 2009 6:16 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
Content of an entire blog is something completely different
than writing an article that contains the names of the best quarterbacks in the conference and not including the Heisman runner-up. He has every right to say that he omitted one which would be a flaw in his post.

It wasn’t what he said, it was the way he said it that I felt was inappropriate.

The way he said it?
Otherwise please refrain from criticizing the content of stories in public. He wrote the piece, he can put whoever the he’ll he pleases in it.
You talk to him like this and then you justify it by saying that he said it wrong? No wonder the only way you guys get comments over here is by writing about what Texas is doing. Everyone is afraid to comment because they don’t want to upset the status quo or get bagged on by fans of their own team. Jarrett you did the right thing, even if miketag and beergut don’t think so. Carry on young man, carry on.

Hey Jarrett, you are welcome at BON anytime.
You might not find much love for your Aggies, but you wouldn’t be publicly scorned like this either. :-)

I think Fuller and Hunter are no brainers. McCoy may get some 2nd team love with a big year.

Jordan Pugh
I saw Pugh when he was at Plano West (I was at Plano Senior) and he definitely could be an all-conference safety.
And with Michael, I think Texas is going to regret only recruiting Whaley for the 2009 class when they see what the true frosh Michael can do.
by prince8846 on Jul 20, 2009 12:34 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
According to some sip, the only reason we got Michael was because he had “issues” that caused everyone else to stop recruiting him. Sounds like another one of Ketchum’s delusions to me. I think Whaley will end up at LB but you never know. He may be their best RB.
by miketag on Jul 20, 2009 6:19 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
from what I understand, Whaley was told he was the only RB to be recruited last year. hence, Texas never would have attempted to recruit Michael (he never had an offer). at any rate, before he had committed to A&M, about the time everyone was wondering why Texas wouldn’t offer Christine, all the other schools backed off recruiting him entirely.
it was also rumored that Christine wanted the offer, and loved Texas and would likely commit. hence all the hand wringing and second guessing of the recruiting staff.
shrug it’s all speculation to me, all of it being basically 5th hand knowledge. but if true, I’m curious as to what the cause was. it’s not like a player’s impending commitment, or even being committed, has stopped schools from recruiting a player and trying to snipe a prospect. especially the #what, 3 running back in the nation?
hence, most fans drawing the conclusion that something must have caused the schools to back off. whether that’s attitude, grades, bidding wars, whatever, it’s all speculation.

so who
Told you all the schools backed off Michael?

I think I've figured it out.
iamthe12thman writes insightful articles about aggie football = 3 comments
iamthe12thman writes insightful articles about aggie football with snide references to “tu” = 10 comments
iamthe12thman writes mind-numbing and convoluted articles denigrating “tu” = 25 comments from BON readers
and damn if it didn’t work this time too.

I guess that would make sense if this piece was not about possible All Conference players for A&M. There were no remarks about tu in the piece.

I really meant that comment to apply to this entire website, not this post in particular.

I should also add.
That in general, I enjoy the writing here, and I’m even starting to become accustomed to the throwaway comments about Texas that are neither funny nor necessary. Of course Longhorns make such comments about Aggies too, it goes both ways.
What does irritate me is articles that are perceived by many in the BON community (I suppose I shouldn’t speak for the whole community, but for a while the headline on BON was “Don’t Feed the Sheep”) to be merely written to incite a reaction among we Longhorn fans. The bulk of the content here doesn’t fall under this category, but enough does that I keep having to stop reading this site for months on end.

If we wanted to antagonize sips to increase the hits on the site, there are a whole lot of things that would be more appropriate than a story on possible all conference players.

Wow.
Did you really remove a post for dissenting with you?
This level of Orwellian censorship would be worrysome if this website had any readership whatsoever.
Count me out, for levels of ridiculous I didn’t think were possible, even on the internets.
by pleaseplaykindle on Jul 21, 2009 3:51 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
actually, I haven't removed any comments from this post
I don’t like to delete comments, so I sometimes just “hide” them from other viewers, which is what I’ve done for all of the comments on here from jarrett.
Given that I banned jarrett from this site, you can understand why I don’t want his comments showing.
Since I don’t want to air any dirty laundry here on the blog, if you want to know the how and why he was removed as a writer, and then later banned, feel free to email me. Just click on the envelope next to my name on the bottom of the page.
