2009 SB Nation Pre-Season All-Big 12 Football Team

On Monday, I listed the players I thought who had the best chance to make All-Big 12 in 2009. I submitted that list to Bob at The Ralphie Report , and he sent it out to all the other SB Nation Big 12 bloggers for consideration when we voted on the pre-season football team. The only rule was that we couldn't vote for the team we covered, so I couldn't vote for any Aggies. We were allowed to pick more than one player at some positions, like QB and TE, even though there is not a second-team or third-team. My picks for pre-season All-Big 12 are after the jump.

Star-divide

Offense

QB: Robert Griffin, Baylor; Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

RB: Chris Brown, Oklahoma; Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State; Rodney Stewart, Colorado

FB: Matt Clapp, Oklahoma

WR: Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State; Dezmon Briscoe, Kansas; Jordan Shipley, texas

TE: Jermaine Gresham, Oklahoma; Andrew Jones, Missouri

OL: Trent Williams, OU; Russell Okung, OSU; Ryan Miller, Colorado; Kurtis Gregory, Missouri;

       Nate Solder, CU

Defense

DT: Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska; Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma

DE: Jeremy Beal, OU; Auston English, OU

LB: Travis Lewis, OU; Keenan Clayton, OU; Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri; Joe Pawelek, Baylor

CB: Perrish Cox, OSU; Dominique Franks, OU

Special Teams

K: Alex Henery, Nebraska

P: Derek Epperson, Baylor

KR: Dez Bryant, OSU

Here is the actual SB Nation Pre-Season All-Big 12 Football Team:

Offense

Pos Name School
QB Sam Bradford OU
RB DeMarco Murray OU
RB Kendall Hunter OSU
FB Matt Klapp OU
OL Russell Okung OSU
OL Trent Williams OU
OL Kurtis Gregory Missouri
OL Chris Hall texas
OL Adam Ulatoski texas
TE Jermaine Gresham OU
WR Jordan Shipley texas
WR Dez Bryant OSU
WR Dezmon Briscoe KU

 Defense

Pos Name School
DE Sergio Kindle texas
DT Ndamukong Suh Nebraska
DT Gerald McCoy OU
DE Auston English OU
LB Travis Lewis OU
LB Sean Weatherspoon Missouri
LB Joe Pawelek Baylor
CB Dominique Franks OU
CB Perrish Cox OSU
S Darrell Stuckey KU
S Jordan Lake Baylor

Special Teams

Pos Name School
K Alex Henery NU
KR Dez Bryant OSU
P Derek Epperson Baylor

Obviously, there were some similarities between the team I picked, and the team all of the other bloggers picked. I do need to say in advance that I owe an apology to Trent Hunter, because I should have hyped him a lot more to the other bloggers. The fact that he was beaten out by Jordan Lake of Baylor is just criminal, and I accept the blame there. Next year, I'll be sending out video footage before the vote to make my case for our players. As you can see, not one single player from A&M made it to the SBN All-Big 12 Team. Von Miller was the only Aggie defender to receive any votes, and Jeff Fuller, Jamie McCoy,  and Cyrus Gray were the only offensive players from A&M to receive votes. Obviously, A&M's players, collectively and individually, have a lot to prove this season.

I would have put Chris Hall on the OL. Blake Gideon woulda got my vote for safety if I couldn’t vote for Hunter. I don’t think anyone understands how good Michael Shumard will be now that he is at his natural position of OG.

Based on your votes

I can’t tell if your more of an OU lover, or a Texas hater. Its all good though, guess you got to ruffle some feathers one way or another.

it really isn't either

I just think OU has some really talented players, and I don’t think very much of texas’ OL.

texas’ running game mainly consisted of McCoy running on broken plays; McCoy was sacked the same number of times in 2008 as he was in 2007 (24), when their OL was spectacularly bad. Given the poor job they do of QB protection and of run-blocking, I couldn’t nominate any of them for all-conference consideration.

There is also the issue that I think Ulatoski may be one of the worst LTs in the conference, and I already nominated two people (Williams and Okung) who are better LTs than him.

Although I probably

would have cast my votes for aggies, just to spite OU.

i think it’s interesting how few players Texas has that’re highly regarded…

no one does less with more amirite?

I don’t think it’s anything against Texas.

IMO, Oklahoma has better offensive people at almost every position. Take the QB situation for example. Colt McCoy is All Big 12 Caliber, but so is Bradford. On defense, Oklahoma is just better (at least on paper).

Texas is a popular pick to go all the way. I’d rather have a great team with less individual awards, than a team with tons of individual awards but not getting the title…

Based on All Big 12

predictions for players and then comparing that to where the teams were voted to finish you could come to the conclusion that Mack Brown is by far the best coach in the Big 12. I wasn’t a math major but as seeing how there were 8 sooners, to 4 longhorns on the 1st team and that the teams ended up sharing 1st place for the South Division, what other conclusion can you reach?

actually

using that logic, Mike Leach is the greatest coach EVAH. We’re not talking about last season, though, we’re trying to predict this season.

I’d have to wait till the end of THIS season to make a conclusion.
