It's About Knowing What NOT To Say
There are still times where $Bill still has a remarkable ability to say exactly the wrong thing to the media.
The recent article by Chuck Carlton in the DMN is another example of this phenomenon.
$Bill says:
"I've been observing an even more competitive effort in our conditioning drills and weight room workouts this summer," Byrne said, "and it's because they have seen other Aggies get to the highest level, and they want a piece of that as well."
The unwritten and unstated message I get from that quote is that before these titles, Byrne wasn't seeing this type of effort. I just think Bill doesn't know what it takes, physically and mentally, to be a scholarship athlete at a Division I-A school, because otherwise he wouldn't make these comments, because he would know that all of these kids live to win. You don't get as far as they have, having your education paid for, competing at the highest level in amateur sports in college, by not wanting to be the best.
I know DollarBill is simply trying to trump up some media coverage for our other athletic teams, especially football, because we're facing falling ticket sales right now. I know he is trying to put on a nice face, because he is close to becoming BankruptcyBill if the football program doesn't start showing a big enough proft to bail him out. I still wish Byrne would think before he talks to the media.
Byrne's failed business model and personal greediness is why we are in this financial mess right now, and he is only giving other media outlets more reasons to look around at what is going on in our athletic department. Instead of spending money putting up those "Building Champion" banners, maybe Byrne should try to hire a competent CFO instead of brigning in another one he can throw under the bus.
We're enterting a serious time in Aggie Athletics, and it is getting to the point where we need serious answers. I don't know if Byrne is the right leadership for our athletic department, because if you can't make a profit when you have record revenues coming in, when can you be expected to be profitable?
Byrne is very lucky Elsa Murano resigned, and there is a power vacuum where the Texas A&M University President should be, because a competent President would consider getting rid of his "leadership".
