Can Texas Tech get flagship status?
I talked to a Tech alum recently, and he seemed convinced Tech would attain flagship status soon. I mentioned that I was aware of the legislation being proposed to help Tech attain that status, but I wasn't sure if it would pass.
Upon doing a little research, I keep thinking this goal for Tech is still out of reach. The legislation wasn't for Tech to achieve this status, it was to facilitate Tech along in the process. Basically, the legislation was to set up a fund to help schools who, if they meet certain requirements to qualify, can begin taking the steps necessary to reach flagship status.
The problem, of course, si that our legislature recently found out that they are operating with a shortfall in their budget, so they don't have the money to fund this initiative. Tech basically needs to wait until the 2011 session to get another shot.

Yes
It’s probably more of a when question. Most Tech alums such as myself think 5 years. There is little doubt that this won’t happen among most affiliated with Tech. A great deal of things need to happen before hand but the school is already making that a top priority.

how do you figure 5 years?
The money isn’t there for this session, so you’ll have to wait for 2011 at the very least to even get the funding to begin to facilitate the process.
The only way I see this happening soon is if it becomes a top priority for the state legislature, and I can’t see that happening unless there is some type of emergency situation where there is overcrowding at A&M and texas, and then a dire need for another school to be moved to tier 1 is created.

will have to wait and see.
I do see it happening within 5 years. Most think by 2013 but right now there is a whole lot of work in front of them.
