Who Is Justin McQueen?
While reading miketag's report on the depth chart after the opening of Fall Camp, the one name that stood out to me was Justin McQueen, who is running first team at one of the cornerback spots, opposite Terrence Frederick. Perhaps no player better exemplifies Sherman's commitment to putting speed on the field than McQueen, who spent the past three years running track at Houston. McQueen ran on the 4X400 and the 4X100 relays. He also competed in the triple jump and long jump in high school, and was all-district at both wide receiver and cornerback. Suffice it to say, he is a decent enough all around athlete to contribute at cornerback, although I'd probably have given him a first look at safety.
McQueen is currently listed at 6'0, 188 lbs, which is ideal for a CB. I'd like him to be closer to 200, so the more physical wide receivers won't be able to hammer him when he jams him at the LOS, but he has the height (and certainly the athleticism) to defend fade routes in the end zone.
McQueen was offered by only two schools coming out of high school, TCU and New Mexico, and he committed to New Mexico before going to Houston to run track. This isn't your normal track-standout-wants-to-try-football story; McQueen apparently has some ability and might really help us this season. He is currently running ahead of Jordan Peterson, who was a starter last season at safety. While I'd really rather see Peterson stay at safety, I trust Coach Kines to put players in a position to succeed.
Coach Sherman spent a lot of the offseason talking about how our players needed to be ready to compete for their jobs from Day 1 of camp; the elevation of Justin McQueen to first team shows just how serious he is.

I like the move of
Peterson back to corner. I think we need more help there and I think Peterson has a better build for corner rather than safety. I’m not sure what he is listed at on the roster but he is only about 5’11 or 5’10.
Hope it helps
It’s great that starters are losing their jobs to better competition, but it also shows how in the hole we are with talent. Hopefully, all the talent and recruting that is coming up is All Big 12 type talent. Otherwise, hopefully Sherman is renting.
i’m a lil confused on the state of A&M recruiting/football, i thought the problem with fran was that he recruited great classes but didn’t coach for shit.
now you’re saying that the players that are already on the roster aren’t athletic/talented enough and that sherman is bringing in more talented players?

Apparently
I don’t really understand it either. It seems as though whenever a coach takes over, they have to rebuild. I know that coaches have different schemes and they need different types of players. But you would think that we would have some sort of decent recruits in the O-Line category. But, apparently not.
My take on it is that last year Sherman and the coaches implimented systems that were too complicated. They have all admitted that, even back during the season. That was certainly a problem that perhaps they can learn from.
But as far as recruiting goes, I guess last year and this year are just turnover/rebuilding/gaps in some recruiting positions. It happens in programs every couple of years (unless you’re Texas :) Although to be fair, the talent that Fran recruited in his last year or two weren’t near the quality of his first years. But there still should have been some good prospects.
Fran didn't recruit offensive line well
I think his final two seasons, he only took two offensive linemen in his recruiting classes. Forget about the talent level, the physical lack of bidoes there is a huge issue, and we suffered for it last year when we had injuries on OL, and had no depth whatsoever to turn to, so we had to start injured players every game.
I would also disagree with the
“unless you’re texas” statement
texas’ issues at TE and RB right now are due to players not fulfilling their potential/inuries/gaps in recruiting
It happens to every program, even USC and Florida had issues at TB and QB
I’ll give you TE, they’re fucking slacking, however RB isn’t as bad an issue in terms of it being the RBs faults… also, he said “turnover/rebuilding/gaps”, not potential and injuries.

So the running game was lacking last year not because of the running backs but because of…….

He recruited some great talent (McGee, Goodson, Bennett) but didn’t develop it at all. He also had huge gaps in his classes. I sweat we went through a three year stretch where we brought in 12 WRs and 4 OL. You can’t sustain a program like that. Also, his LB recruiting was beyond pathetic
