Tellus Excelling At Cowboys Training Camp

Just over a month ago, I was telling Jean-Jaques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News to lighten up, and stop criticizing Martellus Bennett for his MartyB TV channel on youtube. Well, apparently Taylor has stopped looking for reasons to be offended by Bennett, and has started noticing just how talented Tellus is as a football player.

The way Martellus Bennett has performed in training camp, we're going to spend considerably more time talking about MartyB the football player – not MartyB the Internet sensation.

Most of spend our time talking about Tellus the football player; you were the one so desperate for column filler in July, you had to express your moral outrage at a joke between brothers that was posted on the Internet.

The way he's performed indicates that he's going to be an impact player as a receiver and blocker.

Those of us who watched Tellus play for three years at A&M already knew he would be an impact player as a blocker and receiver in the NFL.

Star-divide

Recently, Jerry Jones said that if Bennett didn't have such good hands and run such good routes, the Cowboys would consider moving him to tackle because they think he could be a Pro Bowler. Yes, he mentioned Hall of Fame tackle Rayfield Wright in the conversation.

While being compared to a singular talent like Rayfield Wright is a compliment, Tellus' future is at the tight end position, not spinning down to tackle on the offensive line. I'm not eve sure if Tellus' build could carry the weight needed to play offensive tackle in the NFL.

That's because Bennett has such good lateral quickness and understands how to play with leverage.

Again, did you ever watch him in college? Tellus was a phenomenal blocker, especially in the run game, in A&M's zone read option scheme under Franchione. While I will always believe we grossly underutililized Tellus in the passing game at A&M, he was a very effective weapon as a blocker for us.

MartyB, it seems, is about to be known for a lot more than what he does on YouTube.

To most of us, he is already well-known and liked as a player and as a person, but to someone with an ego like Jean-Jacques Taylor, I guess the only viewpoint that matters is the one that appears under his byline each day.

Tellus had four receptions for 65 yds in the Cowboys' 30-10 schellacking of the Tennessee Titans last night. Maybe Taylor will tune in to MartyB TV to see Tellus' thoughts on the game, so he'll have something else to write about.
