Dirty Dozen Rankings Return

Our weekly rankings of all Big 12 teams. This first week will be the opening week of the season, and with the games ye tto be played, I'm just ranking them on where I think they are right now, entering the season, and where they will be after playing their first non-conference games. As always, comments and criticism are welcome.

  1. Oklahoma: I expect the defending Big 12 Champions to win over BYU in Arlington.
  2. Oklahoma State: Here because a win over Georgia is more impressive than a win over ULM.
  3. texas: They will blow out Lousiana-Monroe, but I want to watch their running game.
  4. Nebraska: Florida Atlantic is a moderately solid opponent, and NU is breaking in a new QB.
  5. Kansas: Northern Colorado is a sweet, sweet cupcake for the Fighting Manginos.
  6. Texas Tech: Taylor Potts will have over 300 yds passing against North Dakota.
  7. Texas A&M: A home win over New Mexico will be a good start for this young team.
  8. Colorado: If they find a QB, they should beat Colorado State. Props for opening with a rival.
  9. Baylor: I expect them to lose to Wake Forest, but it should be a helluva game.
  10. Missouri: I expect them to lose to a more experienced Illinois team.
  11. Kansas State: They will beat UMass, but it will be one of few wins this season.
  12. Iowa State: ISU should beat North Dakota State, but it might be their only win in September.

Notes: Oklahoma State's loss of starting TE Jamal Mosley is an unnecessary distraction going into their game with Georgia, but I still like their experienced offense, and think they have enough talent to outscore the Bulldogs, especially when playing at home. My big question for texas is whether or not Vondrell McGee will be able to get it done for them in their running game. Louisiana-Monroe has switched to a 33 Stack on defense, so if the offensive line struggles against the odd front (see Kansas State 2006, '07), it may be difficult to judge their rushing offense. I think Texas Tech would beat Kansas if you put them head-to-head on the field right now; the only reason I have Kansas ranked ahead of them currently is because I'm not sure about Tech's defense, and Kansas returns an experienced offense. Of course, all first year QBs throw for a gazillion yards in Leach's offense; the only question is if Potts will have a game where he stumbles, ala Harrell vs. TCU in 2006. Missouri might be better than Colorado and Baylor, but with a new QB and games against Illinois and Bowling Green to open the season, they may start off 0-2 on the year.

I would rank us 10th right now

Ridiculous

To rank Texas below Oklahoma State is absolutely ridiculous. Part of ranking teams is resume ranking and part power poll. If the teams are close in the AP poll like 3 and 5 you can base the team that has the tougher schedule ahead. Texas is miles ahead better than Oklahoma State and thus you can’t place them (Texas) third. Also, don’t try and justify that OSU is actually a better team than Texas. When Oklahoma State can play defense let me no. By your logic a win over Georgia is more impressive than a win over BYU and OSU should be first. Hell, Alabama’s win over Va Tech would be impressive than Florida’s scrimage over Charleston Southern and you should put them 1st in SEC rankings.

Your rankings scream of bias and no objectivity. Texas ranked third and Texas A&M ranked ahead of Baylor and Missouri. Come on man, if you want your blog to be taken somewhat seriously and your opinion to matter somewhat (you wouldn’t be putting so much effort for no reason, otherwise go to TexAgs.com) capitalize Texas and stop trying to downplay how good Texas is of a program. You scream of penis envy.

There was a firefight!!!!

Right now, I think Oklahoma is better than OSU

which is the reason they are ranked 1-2

I’m not sure where you get the “texas is miles ahead better than Oklahoma State” theory from; the last time they played, in Austin, texas narrowly escaped with a win.

When Oklahoma State can play defense let me no. (sic)

When texas develops a running game, let me know.

hmmm

Comparing a game from last year and applying to rankings this year confuses your arguement. ;)
Sound familiar?

I’m not sure how you’re ranking OSU over Texas, nor do I really care. Its just that most rankings are based on some sort of reasoning behind them. I think OSU is a good team this year, but without a defense. Texas can run the ball, but they dont have workhorse TB like in years past. I dont have my rankings with me, but they were in the top 50 in rushing yards/game last year.

I really don’t expect them to beat Georgia on Saturday. They are a very underrated team and everyone seems to think that losing Stafford and Moreno make UGA an automatic loss in Stillwater. I strongly disagree.

Have a nice day.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

Well played kriess.

You can’t put too much thought into Gut’s rankings, at least where Texas and A&M are concerned. Texas will always be low to drive pageviews, and A&M will always be high because he’s a true believer. So it goes.

if my sole purpose was to drive pageviews and visits to my site

II’d spend all my time writing about a love triangle between Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow.

Hell, I’d just cover Tebow by himself, there is enough media interest in him to carry a blog.

If I was ranking A&M just based on fandom, I’d have them a lot higher than the second division of the Big 12.

Your explanation for my ranking rationale is just asinine.

by Beergut on Sep 3, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

well, do you want to explain ThePhenomenon's "miles ahead better" rationale, then?

As for OSU being a good team without a defense, texas won 12 games last year without a secondary. I think Bill Young is a very, very good defensive coordinator, and OSU will reap the benefits of his experience this season.

I’m not sure where this arrogance about defense comes from regarding texas fans; OSU held texas to 28 points IN AUSTIN, and that was under their previous coordinator. I think y’all are just making assumptions based on seasons previous to 2008, and trying to apply that to this season and beyond.

If you can run the ball (OSU certainly can, top 20 in rushing for several seasons now), and you can stop the run (they were decent at this last season, think they’ll be better at it this year), you can win games. texas has no running game, but they are replacing their interior DL. Thoase two question marks are reason enough to put them behind Oklahoma State.

As for Georgia, I simply think that Okie State will outscore what I expect to be an average SEC offense breaking in a new QB Saturday.

Okay...
As for OSU being a good team without a defense, texas won 12 games last year without a secondary.

This again? We had a secondary, and very underrated one. Check out Bill C.‘s numbers at Rock M Nation and Huck’s numbers at Barking Carnival for good idea on that. You’re relying a bit too on bare, NCAA rankings, which is especially curious since you consistently blast people who prop up the SEC by pointing to the number of great quarterbacks and offenses in the Big 12.

OSU held texas to 28 points IN AUSTIN

They played well in Austin. They also were the beneficiary of some uncharacteristic Colt McCoy mistakes to end scoring drives and a silly playaction call at the one yard line by Davis when we could have just rammed it in for a TD. Texas never trailed that game. We’re not just making assumptions on previous seasons; we’re trying to objectively look at each roster and make projections. It’s a tricky enterprise to begin with, but considering OSU’s holes on defense (made worse by their loss of their MLB), most agree the preseason edge goes to Texas.

texas has no running game, but they are replacing their interior DL.
If you can run the ball (OSU certainly can, top 20 in rushing for several seasons now), and you can stop the run (they were decent at this last season, think they’ll be better at it this year), you can win games.

If you can pass the ball pretty well, like for example, Colt McCoy did, you can win games too. I think he can back. Not that I agree with your assessment on Texas in the first place.

You sips are funny. Why not let the games play out then if you are right, you can say I told you so? Saying he should rank a team high because others agree with it is kind of dumb.

by miketag on Sep 4, 2009 12:49 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Psst

ThePhenomenon is a Sooner fan.

Personally, I don’t really care where if people put Okie State above us. I don’t agree with it, but it’s preseason, so it doesn’t matter.
