EZ Nwachukwu Sets Freshman Record Against Utah State
I was remiss in not mentioning in my game recap yesterday that Aggie WR Uzoma "EZ" Nwachukwu set the new A&M freshman record for TDs in a game with 4 (three receiving and one rushing) against Utah State. The previous record was held by Leeland McElroy, set in 1993.
EZ scored on receptions of 35 yds, 16 yds, and 50 yds, and on his one carry of the day, a counter for 39 yds. After his performance Saturday, and with Jeff Fuller's injury, it is safe to say that EZ will be the focus of future opponents as they gameplan to stop our offense. This means we need more playmakers to step up, especially in the passing game. I am hopeful that TE Jamie McCoy can become a bigger weapon in the offense. McCoy had three receptions for 66 yds against Utah State, a decent game for him. McCoy, Howard Morrow, Ryan Tannehill, and Kenric McNeal should have more opportunities to shine in the coming weeks, as teams roll over a safety to help cover EZ deep.
The next two opponents we face, UAB (#118) and Arkansas (#90), are at the bottom of the country in pass defense (of course, it is difficult to trust statistics completely at this time, we are only dealing with a quarter of the season having been played now. A&M is currently ranked #106 in the nation in pass defense after only playing two games), so we should be able to pass the ball on both of them. Hopefully, we'll be able to utilize EZ and the other weapons we have on offense to make up for the production we will be missing with Fuller injured.
We have ten players so far who have caught passes this season; I am hoping we'll be able to increase that number this coming Saturday.
