3-4 Defense Explained In Video

In looking for video of Tim DeRuyter's Air Force defense in action last year, I came across some of these videos explaining the 3-4 defense. Some of these are educational, and some are for entertainment purposes only:

Ric Cash, Nike Coach Of The Year Clinic Presentation

This is a somewhat dry explanation of the 3-4, but he is at a coaching clinic. He doesn't do a bad job. This reminds me of some of the stuff we used to do when we ran the 3-4 under R.C. Slocum.

Ric Cash Explaining Pass Pressure From The 3-4

Here is Cash explaining stopping the passing game using the 3-4; you'll notice they actually move to an even front. This is a nice example of the flexibility of the 3-4 defense, and one the reasons it can be so diverse. The use of four linebackers in the base alignment means you have four athletes on the field in the box which the offense has to account for on every play.

Run Pressure Against Zone Read, By Chuck Morrell

This is really the beginning of his explanation of defending the zone read, although if you listen to his explanation, then watch the plays he shows again, it makes sense.

Pass Pressure Against Spread, By Chuck Morrell

He does a better job of highlighting the key players in this blitz, and showing you both the wide and tight view of the play, so you can really see what is happening. He also briefly touches on pass rushing technique.

Winston Moss Discusses Packers 3-4 Defense With Green Bay Fans

Moss is the inside linebackers coach for the Packers. As an aside, I'm jealous Packer fans have something like this where the coach will sit down and discuss football with them. It would be a nice money-making opportunity for the athletic department if the defensive or offensive coaches at A&M sat down and discussed one series of our offense or defense and what we are trying to accomplish to a group of fans, for a nominal donation to the football program. Perhaps they already do this with the fantasy football camp they have every Summer during two-a-days, and I just wasn't aware of it.

I think everyone is aware of the fact that I'm a fan of odd-front defenses. I prefer the 3-4 or a 33 Stack defense to just about every other defensive scheme. I am thrilled that we've hired DeRuyter, and that we're going back to the 3-4 defense. We'll be looking more into what we can accomplish from the 3-4, and what we can hope/expect to see on the field as the off-season goes on. I just thought these videos would be a little informative and entertaining.

Last year's scheme

seemed to be one of these 4-3/3-4 under hybrids but I really didn’t watch the Aggies much except in their game against Texas and some against OU and I mostly just watched Von Miller. Am I right in that assessment?
What type of defense is DeyRuter installing in batsh*t land? A 2-gap patriots style 3-4 or a Wade Phillips 1 gap style?

Either way I think a team that doesn’t routinely bring in a nickelback in this league is setting themselves up. Are the younger Aggy defenders suited for this scheme? I know they are trying to get faster at linebacker and that works either way but who you target on DL has a lot to do with the style of 3-4 played.

Under Kines, we could be described as a multiple odd-front defense

but we were really a 33 Stack defense.

I think we have the athletes to run a 3-4, but that remains to be seen.

I haven’t watched enough film of DeRuyter’s defense at Air Force to say what he ran, but if we are going to be similar to what we did when RC was here, we’ll be a one-gap team. We’ll have to wait and see, though.

Lucas Patterson

I know the coaches would have preferred to play him at LT last year but had to move him to DT to prevent the line getting bowled over like the Jonas brothers at a slipknot concert.

Is he back at NT? Has Sherman acquired anyone who can take on a double team? Or any real DL? I thought your squad was recruiting speed at LB and DB but unless it hasn’t seen the field yet the defense is still really slow. I couldn’t believe it when Colt was splitting defenders up the middle, he looked like Larry Fitzgerald.

Lucas Patterson was recruited as an o-line but necessity pushed to the defensive line and lack of depth at LT is what pushed him back over, but he wasn’t transitioning well due to being on the dline for two years. And that line getting bowled over like the Jonas brothers actually allowed for more rushing yards/gm than yours.

As Miketag wrote in another thread, Lucas projects as an effective 3-4 NT. He does have good size for the position. And as far as Colt running all over our defense. His big run had an obvious hold on Von Miller. You could see your LT holding his jersey pulling him back as Colt ran right past Von’s grip.

If a hold on Von Miller

is all it takes to spring Colt McCoy past your entire defense than it’s a slow defense, I’m sorry.
The line I was referring to getting bowled over like the Jonas brothers was your DL. I said if Patterson hadn’t been kept at DT you were gonna get rolled because all the DL would have been sub 280. Despite your misunderstanding your stat still holds, your defense gave up more rushing yards/game than did the Texas D.
But what I’m mainly gathering is that Patterson is staying at DT which is not surprising because your OL has been making some impressive strides. Also, I don’t think any Longhorns would dispute that A&M has a better running game, and running backs than Texas right now. Michaels is a beast.

Also,

it’s funny to see the Aggies talk about the “new” 3-4 defense. Is there a better sign that the wrecking crew has been forgotten?

I'm sorry

where did I refer to this as the ‘new’ 3-4 defense?

by Beergut on Jan 25, 2010 4:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It would be new

since it hasn’t been run in a few years

I mean

new in the sense of being not what the Aggies have been doing. I think the fact that the details and philosophies of the 3-4 are being covered again on an aggy blog is a good indicator that the Wrecking Crew is forgotten.
I’m not saying anyone here thinks the 3-4 is a newly invented scheme.

even if we were still running the 3-4

without an interruption, I’d still be talking about the scheme on here

I like to talk about football Xs and Os, especially during the offseason.

As a blog, it only makes sense to discuss coaching philosophies and schemes when a new coach is hired. Without an understanding of what a new coach does, you end up with the panic and confusion they have over on Double T Nation, where a lot of people are convinced they’re not going to be running the Air Raid next season, despite the fact that they just hired an Air Raid coach as offensive coordinator.

Colt scored b/c Jordan Pugh took a horrible pursuit angle (par for the course) on the play. Our defense is getting faster every year. It wil look a lot faster next year b/c all those freshmen who started this year will spend a year in the S&C program.
