Offensive Line Isn't A Concern For 2010

Heading into the 2009 season, offensive line was among our biggest concerns on the team. Our line had been atrocious in 2008, and we knew we'd have to depend on some true freshmen to contribute as either backups or starters in 2009. Our line struggled early in the season, especially in losses to Arkansas, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State. After changing up the interior line before we headed to Lubbock, everything clicked, our interior line solidified, and with it, our running game began to take off. Against Tech, we rushed for 321 yards, and began a nice string of success on the ground, as we added 267 yards rushing against Iowa State, 132 against Colorado, 375 against Baylor, and 190 against texas (and what was supposed to be the #1 rushing defense in the nation). Our only poor effort was against Oklahoma (59 yards rushing), where we struggled with their defensive front, including All-American DT Gerald McCoy.  The move of true freshman Patrick Lewis to LG and sophomore Evan Eike to RG made all the difference.

Entering the 2010 season, we return Lewis and Eike as starter, and Matt Allen and Brian Thomas as key backups on the interior line. We lose both offensive tackles, and our starting center, Kevin Matthews, off our line. Matthews' backup, Joe Villavisencio, returns, and I expect Danny Baker and Villavisencio to battle it out to be the starting center. Baker started two games at LT during the season, and also saw some action at RT. After we moved Michael Shumard back to the LT position, Baker was the backup RT and third-string LT. I expect Stephen Barerra and redshirt freshman Rhontae Scales to get a hard look at the LT position. I think we'll try to move Baker inside to center, because Sherman likes his football intelligence and his skillset. I don't think Baker has the feet to be a good LT, though.

The rule of thumb on offensive line is that if you face even-front teams, you want to be strong at the guard positions, and if you face odd-front teams, you need to be strong at the tackle positions. In the Big 12 South, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, texas, and Baylor are all even-front teams. Texas Tech is moving to an odd-front defense, but it is also the same defense we'll be facing every day in practice, so that isn't a concern. Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska are also all even-front teams. Basically, eleven of the twelve teams we'll face int he regular season will all be running a defensive scheme that plays into our offensive line strength, which is the offensive guard position. We're strong at the guard position, so we should be able to control opposing defensive tackles and get our interior run game going.

We need to make some position changes at the tackle positions, but changes on depth chart are a constant in college football. Because of the players we return at the guard positions, and because of the experience and talent we have coming back at the other positions, offensive line isn't a concern heading into the 2010 season.

This is a nice write up of the O line experience in 2009. I would say that the heading into 2009, both the O and D lines were the biggest question marks that A&M was facing, and thankfully the coaches were able to sort out one of them. I agree that the O line should not be nearly the same concern heading into 2010 as it was last year. I have to give Mike Sherman credit when it comes to developing talent in linemen.

In related news, A&M is slated to bring in what many are considering the top or number two offensive line recruiting class for 2010. It’s definitely something to be happy about, as we all saw how disastrous a porous O line can be for an offense. The luxury of applying a redshirt to one or two of the 2010 recruits and putting them through an extra year of S&C should be really helpful in growing the Aggie offense.

what defensive unit as a whole is less of a concern than your most concerning offensive unit?

I would say none, but if forced to choose probably secondary. Though the linebackers should be fairly set as well. Maybe Beergut has a different opinion.

I wish I could share your optimism on the LBs. I’m worried we won’t have enough speed or depth for the first year or two as we transition to a 3-4.

I actually view the opposite. I think we have a lot of talent at LB and have decent depth to contribute right away at the positon. The obvious one is Von Miller at an OLB and Mangan has potential to be a stud MLB. He got thrown in there after being a FB his RS year and got pushed around a little bit but he’s getting better. Garrick Williams has a lot of speed at OLB. Ricky Cavanaugh was reported to be one of the fastest LBs in last years class. Jonathan Stewart is a highly touted LB who was thrown into the fire last year and showed lots of improvement. If we keep corey nelson, he has tremedous speed and can be a stud OLB. Andrew Weaver was the 3rd string Jack last year and has similar size to Von. Sean Porter is another young LB who has a lot of potential and performed well at times.

While i agree there are question marks, We have a lot of young guys who got PT as freshman and a lot of these guys were recruited because of their speed.

I could also agree with that. I maintain that the biggest problem with last year’s defense was inconsistency. All too often they would come up with a stop or decent plays holding the offense to minimal yards on 1st and 2nd and then get burned big for 15-20 yds on 3rd down. It is entirely possible that much of that had to do with play calling, though I don’t know enough about play calling to know if my hunch is correct.

Barerra

Good post. I hadn’t thought about the D-lines we’re facing in 2010. That’s a nice tidbit to pick up.

From what I saw, Barerra got destroyed in the two games he started against Arkansas and Okie State. He got pushed back or beat off the edge on a lot of snaps.

Eike has been pretty solid going back to his freshman year. I rarely saw him get beat at the line. Lewis seemed a little more hit-or-miss, but I thought he played better in the last 2 or 3 games.

Barrera

played well against UAB, did poorly against Arkansas and Oklahoma State. You have to remember, Barrera was a true freshman who played DL in high school who was now asked to face the best pass rushers from Arkansas and Okie State in those two games; that isn’t an easy transition.

I think we’ll see Scales and Barrera battle it out for the LT spot, with an eye on making Scales the eventual permanent starter there.

Eike is just solid, just gets the job done every down, I don’t worry about him. Lewis is a freaking animal, I love watrching that kid play. I spent the whole bowl game focusing on him on the line, and he was hammering the Georgia defenders. Lewis is still raw, but his potential is almost unlimited.

by Beergut on Jan 27, 2010 3:53 PM CST up reply actions

That is a very tough transition just because it is a completely different mindset from the two positions. I was wondering if there was a possibility that Barrera gets moved back over to the DL. We have some solid guys on the OL. While you’d like as many solid backups on the Oline for depth, our dline lacks depth. I’ve read quite a bit about the possibility of Luke Joeckel being ready to play and starting at either tackle. He’s already enrolled and will have a spring under his belt. He has good size and great talent. As far as depth is concerned there are still a few more solid guys from last class and the class before that and Jake Mathews is just as talented as Joeckel and Cedric Ogbuehi needs to get bigger and redshirt, he is talented as well.

I don't want to move any of our OL

we shouldn’t look at moving any of our OL until we have another 5 scholarship OL on the roster; we are only one year removed from having only 6 scholarship linemen on the roster. We need to build sufficient depth on the OL before we even begin to think about moving people around.

by Beergut on Jan 27, 2010 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

I expect Barrera to start at RT with Scales at LT. I never saw Lewis miss.

Sean Porter should be a great OLB for us. I’m excited about our secondary with Judie coming in.
