Buddy Wyatt Takes Defensive Line Coach Position At Kansas
Turner Gill announced the rest of his new coaching staff at Kansas today, and his new defensive line coach is Buddy Wyatt, who has twice been the DL coach here at A&M. I wish Coach Wyatt well, because everything I have heard about him says that he is a good guy and a terrific recruiter. In both of Wyatt's stays at A&M, I have been somewhat underwhelmed with the performance of our defensive line, to the point where I was wondering if his value as a recruiter outweighed what I saw as a lack of performance on the field. I guess we'll get to see if Wyatt can make a difference at Kansas.
Another notable hire by Gill is new offensive line coach J.B. Grimes. Grimes was R.C. Slocum's last offensive line coach at A&M before he left following the 2002 season. I remember when he left Virginia Tech to come to A&M, the Hokie fans weren't sad to see him go. I was never happy with his unit's performance while he was here, and welcomed Jim Bob Helduser when he arrived with Dennis Franchione. Grimes was the OL coach at Mississippi State under Sylvester Croom, and while Croom pulled some upsets at MSU, his ground-bound offense was never what you would call dominant. Grimes is another coach I will watch at Kansas.
With Wyatt, Grimes, and Carl Torbush, Gill has hired three former A&M coaches onto his staff; the problem is, all three of them are people I was okay with us losing. We'll see what they can do in the Big 12 North, I guess.
