Reflections On Win Over texas

  • The win over texas gives us 20 wins for the season, making this our 6th consecutive 20-win season. To give you some perspective on that accomplishment, A&M had six 20-win seasons in the entire history of the program before this current string began.
  • I really, really enjoy watching Ray Turner play. His stat line of 9 points (a career-high), 3 (offensive) rebounds, and 2 blocks doesn't do justice to what he brings to the team as far as energy and effort on the court when he gets into the game. It is going to be fun watching him continue to develop as a player.
  • All season long, I've been waiting for us to have a game where we went on a tear from beyond the arc. I figured since we had so many games where we've been cold from behind the three-point line, there would come a game where we'd be ridiculously hot. It still hasn't happened yet, but we were 7-12 on 3 pt attempts against texas, and 58% from downtown is nothing to sneeze at. The key thing was that we made three-pointers when we needed to, to keep the momentum going, and to stop texas from going on a run.
  • With Bryan Davis sitting for chunks of the second half because of foul trouble, David Loubeau and Khris Middleton did a good job manning the post, and giving us quality minutes.
  • Nathan Walkup doesn't get much attention, but he continues to give us solid minutes. It helps when you go 2-2 from beyond the arc, too.

Star-divide

  • At 20-8 overall, 9-5 in conference, it is a foregone conclusion we're in the Dance, we're just playing for seeding now. A home game against Oklahoma State and a road game at Oklahoma are our only two remaining games. We need to continue to build momentum and play well going into the postseason.
  • Saturday's crowd of 13,717 set a new Reed Arena attendance record, breaking the previous record set in our last home game, against Kansas. I believe we have broken our all-time attendance record three times in our last four home games; good job students and former students who show up at the games.
  • At the beginning of the season, who would have thought that texas might drop out of the rankings, and A&M would be ranked ahead of texas going into the final week of the season?
  • If Mark Turgeon doesn't deserve to be Big 12 Coach of the Year, I'd really like to know who they would pick above him.

Frank Martin is easily coach of the year in the Big 12.

Nothing against Turgeon, but Martin has done an even better job.

agree

There's something spiritual about baseball — like Mother Nature," Garrido said. "You don't mess with it. And I think before a player can really believe in it, he has to experience it."

Valid

He’s done a great job this year but i don’t think he’s had to deal with what Turgeon has. Turgeon had his best defensive player/2nd leading scorer/team leader sustain a season ending injury and was able to take a team that seemed doomed for mediocreness and struggle the rest of the season to a competing team.

True.

I see it as Martin doing the best job in the conference with the players he has. Opposite him is Turgeon who has fought through the most diversity to get the most out of his remaining players. It will be interesting to see who wins the award, but with the high ranking K-State managed to achieve, I think it will be a situation where the ranking of the team determines the winner.

That should read “adversity”, not “diversity”.

How long do you think you guys can hold on to Turgeon?

He seems to be a great coach and at this point I would take him over Barnes. He’s doing more with a lot less talent.

Hadn't thought about that

He would probably have to do something really good in the tournament. Like reach a 16 or higher this year.

we won't have any problem hanging onto him

I think the only program he’d leave for is Kansas, and they’re pretty happy with Bill Self right now, so no worries here.

As long as KU does not come calling, I think we will be fine.

Barnes did really well getting teams to overachieve. He seems to struggle with the ultra talented teams. Barnes is a hell of a coach who has had more success at tu than anyone else has.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless

FILE -- This is an Oct. 18, 2008 file photo showing Connecticut corner back Jasper Howard (6) trying to get the crowd into the game during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Rutgers, in Piscataway, N.J. Jasper Howard had his little sisters' names tatooed on his chest. His friends say it was a constant reminder of why he was at U Conn _ to provide his family with a better life than the one he had in Miami's Little Haiti. (AP Photo/Mel Evans, File) link
