Monday Thoughts

  • After our upset win over Baylor on Saturday, the Aggies are now 6-3 in conference and 17-6 overall. The 6-3 conference record ties us with Kansas State for second place in the current Big 12 standings. We have the week off to prepare for our trip to Lubbock next Saturday to face Texas Tech. Everyone who thought we'd be in second place at this point in the season after the loss of Derrick Roland against Washington, please raise your hand? Me, neither.
  • I'm not sure how many people noticed, but Justin Wilcox, the other defensive coordinator we were considering before we hired Tim DeRuyter, left Boise State to take the defensive coordinator position at Tennessee. Looks like we weren't the only ones who were impressed by the job he did at Boise.
  • Tonight's game between Kansas and texas could have far-reaching ramifications for the rest of the season for texas. The 'sips entered the year as a favorite to compete for the Big 12 title, but they are reeling right now, having lost 4 of their last 6 games. Part of the 'sips' struggle has to do with the fact that they feature a point guard in Dogus Balbay who isn't much of a scoring threat, in my opinion. It is difficult to win conference games when you're playng 4-on-5 on offense. Kansas has struggled somewhat recently, too, needing overtime to beat Kansas State and Colorado before their solid win over Nebraska on Saturday. Part of Kansas' struggles are due to them being the #1 team in the nation right now, though, and everyone wanting to knock them off and throwing everything out there with the kitchen sink to beat them.

Star-divide

  • More coverage has come out on the "Cromwell to NFL" story. The interesting thing, though, is that Steve Kragthorpe may be interviewing for a position coach opening, not the coordinator position. I could see a situation where Kragthorpe is made co-offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach, with Tom Rossley being the other co-coordinator. I like the offenses we ran under Kragthorpe in the late '90s/early '00s, so this move would be okay with me.
  • Along with the offensive coordinator position, we still need to hire a LB coach. I'm sure that is DeRuyter's call, though, as Sherman allows him to build his own staff.
  • It really is a joy to watch our basketball team play together as a team, with someone different stepping up all the time to be the star. When a team sport is truly played as a team, that is when you see the game being played the right way.
