Great Season Ends

The Ags lost to Purdue in heartbreaking fashion in overtime. The season ends and we graduate the winningest senior class in the history of our program. Donald Sloan and Bryan Davis led the team to 100 wins over the past four years. Sloan and Davis led this team to more wins than I thought possible, and helped them overachieve at a level I did not think possible. After the injury to D-Ro, I was just hoping we would win enough games to make it into the NIT. The Ags surpassed my expectations and gave all Aggie fans a season to remember.

Star-divide

They left it all on the court, every time they went out and represented our school. It was not always pretty, but somehow they managed to win 24 games. I said at the beginning of the year, that I expected an 8-8 or 9-7 record in the Big 12. They finished the regular season with an 11-5 record in the conference, good enough for a tie for second place.

I am going to miss Donald Sloan's drives to the basket, and Bryan Davis' multitude of low post moves. Those two willed this team to multiple victories this year. I am going to miss their face tenacious defense. I will always remember Sloan's will to win. He is a tough kid, and is one of my favorite Aggies of all time.

We are set up nicely for the future. Derrick Roland's injury forced our freshmen to step up this year. Ray Turner is going to be a beast once he has a chance to learn our system and gets a year in the off-season program under his belt. Khris Middleton should be a great outside shooter for us. We are bringing in three freshman post players which will give us a lot of depth down low. We will need to see David Loubeau step up his game and become a dominating offensive presence. B.J. Holmes needs to find the outside touch he had last year. Dash Harris needs to get healthy and work on his outside shot. I really think next season we will have a more talented team than this year. I hope they play as well together and with as much heart as this team did. I think we are a Sweet 16 team next year, and maybe much more depending on the draw we receive.

I am very proud of this team and the way they fought and represented A&M. They gave us everything they could, which is all we could ask for.

Next Year

No doubt that next years team will be more talented. I’d even include Naji Hibbert as a guy who perform really well next year. Toward the end of the season he had some nice hustle and defensive plays which is what he does best, hustle and transition. His offense should come along over the offseason and could be a good starter either possibly next year. Loubeau’s development over the season is very promising and i think next year he could be one of the top offensive post players. I’m actually excited about incoming freshman Daniel Alexander, he is long and lanky and will probably need to redshirt and put on some mass but he is a very good shooter. Keith Davis looks to be a much more physical guy down low and a strong force down low.

Next Year Worry

I am a class of ‘01 and I’m really worried about our team next year. This year Sloan was the only guard who could occassionally take someone off the dribble and score and he is gone. Davis was the only tough guy down low and he is gone. We will need for guys that weren’t very good this year to really step up, especially guards, or we won’t even make the NIT.

Sloan was not the scoring machine that he is now when Law left.

He stepped it way up, just as someone is going to have to do next year.

I expect Hibbert and Middleton to step up in a big was in the scoring department. We will be a high-low team next year. Loubeau does need to step up and show some more toughness. However, Davis was not a tough guy when he arrived on campus either. Going up against Joe Jones in practice every day toughened him up. I think Kourtney Robertson is going to give us a big boost down low. Oyedeji will offer an immediate shot blocking presence. Am really not worried about the post. BJ will need to be the outside threat he was as a sophomore, in order to lessen the loss of Sloan. Will be interesting to see if Daniel Alexander is the sharpshooter that he is advertised as being.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless
