2010 Big 12 Preseason Football Team Released

The Big 12 released the media's preseason All-Big 12 first team, and A&M had four players make the squad. Jerrod Johnson was named first-team QB, and preseason offensive player of the year, and Von Miller was named first-team LB and, along with Nebraska's Jared Crick, was named preseason co-defensive player of the year. Jeff Fuller was named first-team all-conference at the WR position, and Cyrus Gray made it onto the first team at kick returner. It seems that the consensus of the media is that the Aggies don't have a lot of all-conference caliber talent on their team, but the players we have of that caliber are really, really good.

I think it is something of a joke that the injury-prone DeMarco Murray made first team over Christine Michael, but I think Murray is benefiting from past hype there. When the season is over, I think Michael will be recognized as an all-conference performer. I'd actually argue that Nebraska's Roy Helu Jr. belongs on there before Murray; Helu rushed for over 1000 yards behind a porous offensive line last season, while Murray had only 705 yards rushing behind OU's makeshift line.

I'm convinced the Big 12 needs to eliminate the TE position from their all-conference teams; it seems if they can't give recognition to some Missouri wide receiver masquerading as a TE, they'll just choose someone from Nebraska. Instead of nominating Mike McNeill for all-conference, they should just eliminate the TE position from the all-conference team, add another WR, and put Tech's Alex Torres on the first team; Torres is actually deserving of the recognition.

If Kyle Hix is the answer at first-team offensive tackle, you're aksing the wrong question. I've given up on the media ever being able to accurately grade offensive line play, though.

Blake Gideon from texas seems to have taken the safety spot reserved for players commentators call "gritty" and "cerebral" and "leaders" because they can't actually talk about them being good. This position was normally taken by Baylor's Jordan Lake, but now that he's gone, they had to find someone else to put in his place. Trent Hunter should be first team safety ahead of Gideon, and I think even some texas fans would agree with me on that selection.

I think Dustin Harris should have received some consideration for first-team cornerback, but I know his injury last season took him out of the spotlight, so a lot of the media is probably ignorant of how good he is.

What is your take on the preseason Big 12 all-conference team?

Disagree on Gideon

I thought he was great as a freshman and was solid last year. If he was black no one would talk about how gritty he was, and would instead talk about how he is simply good. He is quantum leaps better than Lake IMO. Hunter did not play well last year so I do not have a problem with him being ranked behind Gideon since these lists are always based on last year. We already knew that the media knows nothing about OL. Harris was great for a true freshman, but will have to put up a great year as simply a football player before he receives all conference recognition.

someone sounds bitter...

…i think beergut might have been looking for the all-texas a&m team. the all-big 12 team is where we assemble the best players from the WHOLE CONFERENCE.

it’s going to be hard to get recognition for individuals in one of the worst defenses in the big12 in which you lost every game televised. typically because of the defense.

that only makes sense

to the extent that sportswriters can’t look at a team and see what is happening

just b/c you are on a poor defense doesn’t mean you are a bad player, as Von Miller proves

this goes back to my earlier contention that many sportswriters are idiots who only know what the coaches tell them

BU had two preseason all conference

Guys last season. When was the last time their defense was good? Media writes about what the SIDs feed them and their own bias tells them. Anyone ever actually watch Jordan Lake try to cover someone?

I’m not arguing that Hunter should be on the first team or even recognized, but that the media in this region is devoid of football knowledge as a whole.
