No Matter How Successful We Are, Bill Byrne Will Always Find A Way To Say The Wrong Thing
Kate Hairopolous of the DMN, probably their laziest reporter when it comes to getting timely news out, did an interview with Bill Byrne. Among the issues touched on was his infamous phone call to a fan who asked Byrne how he could breathe while acting as DeLoss Dodds' unlicensed proctologist; Byrne again apologized for his message that the fan deserved to have his butt kicked (something I thought, taken with other incidents under his watch, he should have been fired over). True to his "I'm always good for saying something stupid every time I'm interviewed" form, Byrne goes on to say this:
"I actually call people a lot," Byrne said. "First time I've left a message. The normal thing will be, I'll say, 'This is Bill Byrne,' and there'll be a pause. They'll say, 'The athletic director?' And I'll say, 'Yes.'
"There will be a pause. And nine times out of 10, the response is, 'Ooh, I shouldn't be writing when I'm drunk.'
"And then they apologize."
Terrific. So, when our fanbase writes to Byrne to criticize him or express disagreement with a decision he has made, it's because we're a bunch of drunks. Nice, $Bill. You really know how to get a fanbase on your side.
The DMN even obtained some of Byrne's emails to fans following the realignment talks with the SEC and Pac-10:
"We had the chance to gain the upper hand and you guys couldn't pull the trigger," one fan wrote Byrne. Byrne responded in part: "Take a look how Arkansas and South Carolina did before they entered the SEC and how they have done since. Unless you're the lead dog, the scenery is always the same." If Byrne actually believes we are comparable to South Carolina and Arkansas, we really need to get someone else to take over as athletic director at A&M; the difference in resources alone shows that there is no comparison between A&M and those two schools. At best, Byrne looks like someone who isn't able to see the whole picture, despite his claims to the contrary. At worst, Byrne looks like someone who is afraid of the competition we might face in the SEC, which means he isn't the man for the job at A&M. Either way, he's shown he can still be relied on to say the wrong thing and embarrass A&M when put on the spot by the fans or the media.

I really hate Bill Byrne.
Not only is he terrible at his job, he’s a real fucking asshole. What a terrible representative of the school that I love.
Well said...
…I’ve never liked the man because I thought he was arrogant and I generally didn’t agree with whatever I happened to be hearing/reading. However, you’ve succinctly put it in words and to quote Doc Holliday in Tombstone…"Yes, but there’s just something about him, something around the eyes, I don’t know, reminds me of…me. No, I’m sure, I hate him.
Is this blog blinded by SEC
I am sorry but i have to agree with Bill. Our track record in Big12 in the last 10 years has been pathetic that we have no credibility to compete in a new conference. When was the last time we beat OU, we won at Tech after 17 years. Eventually we must be ready to compete with anyone anywhere but right now we need to rebuild and gain ground where we are. Lets go to SEC 2 or 3 years down the line but as a consistent top 25 team not as someone who loses to quality opponents by 40+ points.
I would love to pull down t.u. from their castle built on air but after sticking it to them on the field first.
Chicken before the egg
Byrne showed up 02 and what do we have to show for his tenure? The poor decade of which you speak has to rest at his doorstep; you just can’t separate the two. Can Byrne, get a non-pathological AD in, and move out of this “Dead conference, walking”.
if Byrne is the problem then what use is it to move to the SEC? you should be clamoring to fire him instead of move to a conference widely regarded as tougher than the Big 12, which you’re struggling in as is.

Take a look around
the Big 12 is on borrowed time. I am suggesting, as I said above, get rid of Byrne and move to a decent conference that provides benefits to our program. Typical tu nonsense to think that just because we’ve been down and you’ve been up recently that that situation will continue forever…..
Besides the obvious?

We were going to leave in two years
It is not like we were going to the SEC this year. Anyways, the move is about the next 50 years and not the next five. It is also about more than just football.
Arkansas not a "lead dog"
The Razorbacks have been in the SEC Championship Game twice in the past decade. The Aggies can’t say that. As for the Gamecocks? At least they’ve beat Georgia in the past five years. TAMU can’t say that.
There’s just a whole lot of delusion going on here.
Seeing that the BigXII is only entering it's 14 season
And the Aggies have been to the championship game twice in that SHORT time, what’s your point?
The Aggies also don’t play Georgia on a consistent basis like the hogs, so I’d have to ask you, what is the Big XII equivalent of UGA?
The Aggies have beaten every team in the Big XII at least twice since it’s inception. That includes Oklahoma, Texas, and Nebraska.
No delusion needed in seeing that.

You guys are all full of it
Everyone was excited when we got Fran from Alabama – it didn’t work out. Now Byrne has hired the classiest coach in college football who has made tremendous strides with a team that had zero speed or talent. (This year’s frosh class is only Sherm’s second. Remember, we had a total of two scholarship OL when he arrived).
A&M athletics overall have NEVER EVER risen to the heights they have under Byrne – not even close. Yes, he’s rough around the edges. Would you guys rather we go back to where we were?
I’m embarrassed by the lot of you. Your behavior is unbecoming of an Aggie.

“Everyone was excited when we got Fran from Alabama” – I wasn’t, even less so when he went away from the traditional Wrecking Crew defensive scheme…
“Now Byrne has hired the classiest coach in college football” -Yup, agreed. But even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.
“A&M athletics overall [would] have NEVER EVER risen to the heights they have under Byrne – not even close.” – A comment that you are completely unable to substantiate. But I will say there is no reason to think that exposure in a larger, far more competitive conference would not have led to our back-to-back track & Field championships, Golf championship, and recently good runs at basketball and baseball but most certainly would have helped the football program.
“I’m embarrassed by the lot of you. Your behavior is unbecoming of an Aggie” – I am sorry to hear that, but I don’t know what this even means.
Considering
Byrne is the reason so many Ags drink, doesn’t he share at least some of the blame?
