Fall Camp Practice Notes III: First Day In Pads
The Aggies held their first full-pads practice yesterday, and the good news is that there have been no injuries reported. Sherman said there was a lot of hitting and it was the most physical first-pads practice we've had since he's been here. Coachspeak 101 right there.
The most interesting comment from Sherman was regarding the tight end position:
Sherman said in the offseason that tight end Jamie McCoy would be the most missed player, and workouts have confirmed that.
McCoy was a hybrid who could play tight end, fullback or slot receiver. He's in camp with the St. Louis Rams after signing as a free agent.
"Heck, at St. Louis he's [also] playing tailback," Sherman said.
Sherman has seen progress from senior Kenny Brown (6-3, 227), redshirt freshman Hutson Prioleau (6-4, 251), sophomore Michael Lamothe (6-3, 231) and freshman Nehemiah Hicks (6-4, 248).
"We have a ways to go there, we're not set yet," Sherman said.
If there are questions at the TE position, then why did we move Tommy Dorman to ILB? Dorman has the size (6'2, 237 lbs) to be a nice receiving target at TE. Maybe Dorman struggled with the blocking, but I don't see how completely moving him to the other side of the ball and putting him in a scheme which is completely foreign to him is going to get him onto the field faster. We'll just have to wait and see if Dorman sticks at the ILB position, or if they eventually move him back to offense.
Regarding Sherman's comments on Jamie McCoy, he is correct in that he will be missed. McCoy was the prototypical H-back for us last season, able to play TE, WR, or FB. texas fans who are all excited about adding an H-back to their offense (the last time texas fielded an H-back, Brock Edwards was assaulting frat boys in Austin) need only watch film of McCoy last season to see the versatility of the position.

do the aggies have open practices coming up?

if it is outdoors, it is an open practice
if it is in the McFerrin Center, it is a closed practice
that is pretty much how we do it
since our two-a-days are split with one outdoor/one indoor each day, we basically have one open practice every day
