Ben Bass' Season Will Be A Year Of Redemption, And Other Friday Thoughts
- DE Benn Bass has taken 51 credit hours in the last year, holding a better than a 3.5 GPA in order to get back into A&M, and get back into the academic good graces of the school and program so he can play football again. Bass loves A&M, and is looking forward to receiving his degree in real estate. After bulking his 6'5 frame up to 280 lbs while working out on his own, Bass is in the best shape of his life, and is ready to contribute at DE in the Aggies 3-4 scheme. I've watched Bass since he was in high school at Plano West, and the hard work he has done to come back to A&M and his willingness to be a team players and contribute wherever he is needed makes him a fun player to watch this season, as he works to redeem himself on and off the field.
- It is looking like we will be starting two true freshman tackles, with Luke Joeckel and LT and Jake Matthews at RT. I was hoping Brian Thomas would claim the RT spot, but it looks like Matthews has beaten him out for the starting position. With Matt Allen having a terrific camp at center, it looks like our starting offensive line for 2010 will be LT Luke Joeckel, LG Evan Eike, C Matt Allen, RG Patrick Lewis, and RT Jake Matthews. Thomas was the RT as we came out of spring practice, so the fact that Matthews is now the starter means he beat him out for the position, not that we put him there out of necessity.
- One of the advantages of our switch to a 3-4 defense is that it gives our offensive line multiple looks to work against in practice. With 10 of the 12 teams in the Big 12 running a base even front defense, working against both odd and even fronts will pay off for our young offensive line.
- The #8 Aggie soccer team opens their season at 7:30 PM tonight against #1 North Carolina at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. You can follow the gametracker here, and watch it live here. The Tar Heels are the two-time defending national champions, so this is a good test to see where we are early in the season.

I don’t think it’s ever a good thing to be starting true freshman on the oline, I think Matthews will turn out to be a great player for you guys if he keeps his health.

Went to the soccer game tonight
the team is no where near where it needs to be to win a national championship.
It is a good thing to start true freshmen if they are better than the redshirt juniors ahead of them. A few years back UGA started 3 true freshmen on the OL and won 10 games. You play your 5 best OL. It would be ideal if they were redshirt juniors and seniors every year, but that is not realistic.
that’s the exception, not the rule. good luck winning 10 games this year with your 2 true frosh.

So what's the rule?
How many games are we going to win with freshmen OL starting? If Jake Mathews is simply better than Brian Thomas should we start Thomas b/c he has 4 years in the program? How’d that philosophy work out for the tu defense the year before boom m’er arrived?

the rule is the more experience across the oline, the better.
I’m not saying A&M would do better with someone else in the true freshmen’s places, I’m saying it’s a scary thing that your best option is a true freshman.
