What the hell is Dennis Dodd smoking, and where can I buy some?

If you are not familiar with Dennis Dodd, you will be very soon. He is one of the main cfb writers for cbssports.com. Today he released his preview for the Big XII. While I don't have a problem with his prediction of the Conference championship game, there are a blur of other things that Dennis has said that will anger not just us Aggies, but the rest of the Big XII in general. Read those after the jump.....

Star-divide

Offensive Player of the Year

Daniel Thomas, RB, Kansas State: This former juco quarterback exploded on the scene with a 1,265-yard season. A 1,500-yard season is definitely possible this season with K-State lacking punch at quarterback. There already is buzz about NFL potential from the first Wildcat to open his career with back-to-back 100-yard games in 43 years. Thomas looks like the tailback version of Michael Bishop -- a juco quarterback turned major-college superstar.

Defensive Player of the Year

Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska. Or whoever makes the most plays for the conference's best defense. Crick is the most likely choice because he was the other tackle beside Suh. Crick doesn't have to be Suh, just close. The other tackle's name is Steinkuhler (Baker). You might have heard of his dad, Dean. The secret is, this defense is better without Suh.

Coach of the Year

Tommy Tuberville - Texas Tech

Big XII South

4. Texas A&M: Mike Sherman has one of the nation's best defenders, linebacker Von Miller, but his unit can't stop anyone (105th nationally). It had the nation's No. 5 offense but is missing three starters on the offensive line. The whole program seemed to be contrarian. The Aggies lost a game by 48 (to Kansas State), yet won a week later by 22 at Texas Tech. It lost by 55 to Oklahoma, then beat Baylor by 35. The defense definitely has to be fixed. New defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter has installed a 3-4, which has somewhat been the answer to combating the spread of the spread offense lately. Quarterback Jerrod Johnson might be the best in the Big 12, but the Aggies will go only as far as the defense takes them. Must-see game: Oct. 9 vs. Arkansas in Arlington, Texas. Aggies still embarrassed about last year's 47-19 debacle at Cowboys Stadium.

Dodd is just a typical national media writer with limited knowledge of the conference. Any guy who has predictions for every conference obviously is only going to focus on the same spotlight teams that every other national media person does. But what about aTm do you not agree with? The offense is good and the defense needs to answer questions before they should be given respect. ya’ll are in the exact same boat as ttu. Good offense, questionable defense. Except tech (notably tech’s defense sans the aTm game) is coming off a better year. And this is one of the first “experts” that have actually tabbed tech as 3 and aTm as 4 instead of the other way around. But really there are too many unknowns at the moment to really know. Besides, after reading the rest of the article, all he really cares about is ut, ou, and nebraska. not too much analyzing past that.

“but the Aggies will go only as far as the defense takes them.”…this is spot on, though, just as could be said for 90% football teams—crappy defenses give up too many points and lose. if the new defense is not up to snuff, the season will be identical to last year. and if tech’s defense is not up to snuff, they will take a step backwards in the win column.

Now for the “Offensive Player of the Year”, don’t know why he would pick a player on a mediocre team in the weak half of the conference.

And as for Tuberville as coach of the year, he has a lot to prove before anyone should be making that statement. As a tech fan, i would love for him to accomplish that, but i don’t know why this guy predicts the coach of a perceived third place team as coach of the year. Doesn’t make sense.

I didn't mind A&M's predicted finish.

The players of the year and coach of the year just befuddled me, even for a pre season write up.

This is funny

You think Dennis Dodd is smoking something partly because he thinks A&M will finish 4th in the Big XII South, while most people think A&M fans are smoking something because they think the Aggies will be a contender in the Big XII South.

Actually, no.

I’m more enraged by his predictions on the players of the year and the coach of the year. Predicting an order of finish is like playing craps. You can’t.

I was thinking more of the SEC.

He’s always been an SEC homer.
