Who Is Your Pick For Aggie Breakout Player In 2010?
I was perusing Brian Smith's FSSW column on Big 12 breakout players in 2010, and thought his pick of Coryell Judie was something of a cop out. It is too easy to pick a juco All-American transfer who was expected to see action last season as a difference-maker this year. I think you need to delve a little deeper, and look for the player who is overlooked, and will surprise people a little with his impact this season. Smith has some good picks around the conference (despite his conviction that texas' Emmanuel Acho was a backup DE to Sergio Kindle last season, I thinking Smith doesn't realize Sam Acho is a DE, while Emmanuel is a LB), but I think he didn't look close enough at A&M's roster.
I think our breakout player this season will be Terrence McCoy, who has gone from only seven receptions last season to beating out incumbent star Uzoma Nwachukwu for his starting position. McCoy followed up a strong Spring with a solid performance in the Maroon & White Game, showing himself to be a favorite target of Jerrod Johnson. I think a lot of the media is overlooking McCoy, and will be surprised at his production as he becomes a difference-maker for us.
My secondary pick for breakout player is redshirt freshman TE Hutson Prioleau. Although we're a no-huddle spread offense, Sherman likes to use TEs as both blockers and receivers. Prioleau has the size (6'4, 250 lbs) to block linebackers and defensive ends, and the athleticism to be a mismatch as a receiver.Prioleau emerged from Spring practice as the starter at TE, and I could see him becoming a favorite target of Johnson when we're in our 11, 12, and 21 personnel packages.

TE
is the most under-utilized weapon in college football. Are there that few talented TEs in NCAAF? Anyway, Prioleau is the real deal. Here’s hoping they get him the ball.

Lucas Patterson
If he works on his hand strength, if he gets one of those crushing grips that are essential for great defensive linemen, he’ll be drafted — 3rd – 5th round.
I went with the TE
would’ve gone Swope, but I thought he did well enough last year to dq him from this discussion.
I think Swope is a known commodity
which is why I didn’t pick him
I think people expect him to increase his numbers from last season, so it isn’t as much of a surprise.
sounds like some people are voting for sleeper players, and some are voting for breakout players…

to me, a true breakout player is a surprise
someone the media didn’t pick to make a big difference the next year
Swope has received some ink, while Prioleau and McCoy have largely been ignored, so that is why I picked the two of them over him.
Legit question from a Longhorn to you Aggies
Texas didn’t offer Swope, who likely would have committed. We didn’t offer C. Michaels and we didn’t offer Nwachukwu. These are all studs playing for y’all who sources say wanted a Texas offer.
Why do you think Texas didn’t offer them? Were they just likely to pick A&M and Texas didn’t want to look like we lost a battle with the Aggies, or did UT honestly fail to properly evaluate the talent of these guys? For the life of me I can’t understand why Texas didn’t offer C. Michaels, but he is making us pay. Swope and Nwachukwu will apparently make us pay next year.
you really have two options in the answer to that question
if you choose to believe texas didn’t offer them because they didn’t think they were good enough, then your coaching staff must suck at talent evaluation
given how some sections of your team (cough offensive line cough running back cough) have performed lately, this conclusion isn’t out of the realm of possibility
the best option for texas fans is to believe that they weren’t offered b/c none of them wanted to go to texas, and Mack doesn’t offer people who aren’t dying to go to texas
Michael was a 5-star recruit and Nwachukwu was a 4-star recruit, per rivals, so I’m thinking the texas staff knew they were talented. With those two, it may have been an issue where they simply didn’t want to go to texas, and Mack knew it. I think the whole “we didn’t offer them” excuse is really just to make the texas fans feel better. It sounds a helluva lot better than “we had no chance in hell in getting him, because he didn’t want to come here”. It also allows texas fans to continue to believe the fallacy that everyone really wants to go to texas, which simply isn’t true, but don’t tell them that.
Swope was a three-star guy who wasn’t heavily recruited, so they may have just evaluated him poorly. His other offers were from Baylor, Duke, Colorado State, and Texas Tech, so it looks like a lot of people missed the boat on him.
Who are your sources that say
They wanted a tu offer?

Rivals/Scout
According to Rivals, Michael didn’t have Texas listed as a school of interest; Scout shows that he did but with no offer. Nwachukwu does not show Texas as a school of interest per either site. Of course that could just mean that Texas didn’t try to recruit either one of them, and thus the lack of interest. Equally, in Nwachukwu’s case particularly, it may mean that he told Texas flat out he wasn’t interested in playing for them. It’s all speculation, regardless.
On a more general note, I can see why a kid of 16-18 would want an offer from Texas, even if they had zero desire to play there. An offer from a top flight football school justifies their talent. Imagine if you were that age and held offers from Texas, Ohio State, USC, and Alabama (and/or Florida). Talk about a massive stroke to the ego.
Michael
Texas didn’t want him, they seem to be passing on alot of top flight RB’s in the last few years. I’m not sure why, I hear it is because they make promises to players to only bring in one player at the rb position. They told Chris Whealy this I am told.
I remember recruiting stories about all three of these guys being interested in Texas
Maybe it was just hype, but there were stories about them lining up trips. etc. And C. Michael definitely said he wanted a Texas offer.
I think Texas fully evaluated these guys and didn’t pursue them. I can understand Swope, but I don’t understand why we didn’t go after Michael. I heard it was his attiuted, but he seems to be a standup guy for y’all.
LB
My pick is outside linebacker Sean Porter, he has good speed although undersized at 6’ 210 but in the 34 scheme with alot of zone blitzing, along with extra attention that Von Miller will get, I think he could be close to 10 sacks thins season.
