Today Is The First Day Of Fall Camp
For all intents and purposes, Aggie football season essentially begins today, as we have our first practice beginning at 6:30 PM. We're still waiting for Jonathan Mathis to be completely certified, but his academics are in order, we're just waiting for the paperwork to be finished. My big hope for this camp is that we exit it with no injuries, and position experiments for Rhontae Scales (at NG) and Malcolme Kennedy (at safety) go smoother than the attempt to make Lucas Patterson a left tackle last year. Kennedy played both offense and defense in high school, so I'm not so concerned about him, but if Scales doesn't show that he can compete for a spot on the two-deep at NG, I hope we move him back to offensive line quickly.
The media probably isn't going to pay much attention to it, because Ryan Tannehill is the backup quarterback, but the competition between Jameill Showers and Matt Joeckel for the third-string QB position is probably one of the most important we'll have at camp. If Showers or Joeckel step up, that will allow Tannehill to spend this season at wide receiver, per Sherman's preference.
We'll see a lot of reports of certain players doing well or looking good on one or two plays; Von Miller will be described as "virtually unblockable" by one or two sportswriters, Uzoma Nwachukwu and Jeff Fuller will both make phenomenal catches at every other practice, and our DBs will have some nice pass breakups. If we see reports of multiple PBUs by Malcolme Kennedy, that will be a good thing. The one thing I want to hear reports on, that we're spending a lot of time focusing on fundamentals, like tackling, probably won't be reported on much, if at all. Regardless, rejoice, it is football season now.
