Aggies Defeat Lumberjacks Celebration Thread
I just arrived home from College Station, and here are a few random thoughts:
- The tailgating scene has really exploded on campus, with people setting up their tents, smokers, and satellite televisions virtually everywhere. As someone who can remember when the first tents were brought out to tailgates, this is a welcome sight to behold.
- The attendance yesterday was 81287, a new school record for a home opener. Considering who the opponent was and considering the negative coverage we have received in the media all preseason, it was a pleasant surprise to walk into Kyle and look around and see the stands packed. I think fans are really optimistic about this team and the progress Sherman is making.
- This is probably the most disciplined I have seen an Aggie defense play since RC was walking the sidelines for us; that last happened in 2002. The new defensive coaching staff has made a world of difference with our players.
- As I have speculated before, we're running a 3-4 base on defense, but against a spread team like SFA, we ran a 33 Stack.
- True freshman Demontre Moore is an athletic freak of nature. We had the 6'4 248 lb OLB lining up on SFA's slot receivers in the Stack. He was covering them, stride for stride. SFA was running one-step drops out of the shotgun to get the ball out quickly, and take away our ability to bring pressure. Moore had the only sack of the game, along with his 5 tackles, which ranked second on the team. With Von Miller going out with a sprained ankle, we didn't miss a beat with Moore in there as his replacement.
- Ryan Swope, who miketag predicted will have 50 receptions this season, started off with 13 today, leading the team with 106 yards receiving on the day. He is off to a nice start for the 2010 season, and was a weapon for us today.
- I'll delve more deeply into the game later today, but this is your celebration thread, to post any thoughts and comments you have on the game. For any of you who want to point out that it was "just" SFA, a DI-AA program, I'll remind you that Ole Miss and Kansas would love to have a win over a DI-AA program right now.

looks like the DMN
got their stats from the ribbon boards. For some reason whoever was running the ribbon boards counted 5 of Swope’s receptions as laterals that he considered runs. That is why the stats on the ribbon board were off all game.
It seamed like CBS and ESPN's gametrackers were off during gameplay.
So it kind of screwed with some when it came to stats. That being said, it was great to hear the dulcet tones of Dave South again.
My notes – For as wide open as the offensive stats were, it was really nice to see Hicks get some good looks at the TE position. With the plethora of WR’s on offense, Hicks could be the Aggies hidden gem.
Will Coach Sherman flip a coin every week to determine who gets to run over 100 yards for A&M?
I hope Von Miller’s injury isn’t major and he gets back on the field asap. He’s got a lot of expectations to live up to this season, including All-America honors.

I think tu will be fine when they decide to go back to a pass first offense b/c that is what they are. I will say that Gilbert did not look as good as I expected. If I was Mack Brown, I would start your freshmen WRs b/c it is obvious to me that the upperclassmen are not game changers. I would focus my offense around passing the ball to Barrett Matthews.
I do not think OU will be fine. Am just not convinced that Landry Jones is anything more than an average QB.
I need another game of UT football to come up with a good idea of how they roll.
to krkenney – If Rice isn’t to be taken lightly, then Saturday’s game is just testament of how good UT’s defense will be with more game time underneath their shoes.
As far as OU goes, they do look very suspect and it also looks like they’ll be relying heavily on the run as well. Broyles was basically a non factor in that game.

I didn't watch Oklahoma...
… but I don’t think Rice is someone to be taken lightly, even if they aren’t great. I think they could get near bowl eligibility if they quit playing that freshman QB.
